1997 210 won't release key sometimes

Ok, I've searched but cannot find anything about this one. I have a 1997 E300 that can be very flaky about releasing the key after shutting it off. The cluster says "take key" but it is locked in many times. If you fiddle with it some it will eventually click, turn counterclockwise a hair further, then come right out. Is this something that a computer somewhere decides it's ok to remove the key and energizes a solenoid latch, or simply a loose mechanical in the lock cylinder?

Thank you!

I think this has the same system as my 97 SL320, however have a look at a shop manual to confirm.

Don't hold the brake peddle down when you turn the key , check your shifter bushings / shifter adjustment.

There is a cable that runs from the trans, to brake peddle to ignition cylinder. This is an interlock to prevent turning the key to " 0 " unless you are in park and off the foot brake.

Thanks for the info - more than likely I'm holding the brake pedal down. I'm surprised there is a cable for this - would expect it to be electronic like the rest of the car...
