603.97 vs 603.971 engines
Are the 603.971 engines more reliable than the 603.97. I need to replace the engine in a 91 350 SDL. Also thinking of looking around for a used 603.961. Which is the best choice? Will the engines interchange? I heard the only thing needed for a .961 engine swap was motor mounts, is this correct? What is needed for .97 to .971 exchange?

The .971 has a higher redline than the .970. The turbocharger is different (vacuum control vs pressure control). Other then that they should be about the same I'd think. There might be a difference in the oil pan

Very late US .971s supposedly came with updated rods.
Dipstick position is different but of no consequence. The .960 is also a swappable block. Sixto 87 300D |
