1987 300TD Wagon - Comfort Module (anyone added this)

I have a 1990 300TE and I love the simplicity of the comfort module. I love the one touch windows down and I love closing the windows with the key.

Has anyone added this module into the earlier cars. I really want to find one and put it into my 1987 300TD. Currently I have pulled the entire interior and I know I can do it again pretty easily, so I am not worried about how much work it is. I am just wondering how much rewiring it would be.

I am guessing it would mainly be wiring up the window controls and switching out the control panel and switches to the version that support the comfort control box. And I guess it would also tie into the door locking system somewhere, just not sure if it has to go all the way to the door or if it ties in somewhere else.......

Any insight would be helpful.
Thanks

Go to w124-zone.com, register, and download the wiring diagram for the W124. The wiring diagrams for both gens of 124s are in the same deck and you can print out the corresponding pages for the affected systems and compare the differences.

I suspect you will need the donor interior wiring harness to make this work. And you will likely have to open up all 4 doors in order to make the connections to the window motor terminal block in each door.

The sunroof control is tied into this too, it will likely require replacing the motor.

Locks not too bad, there is a tie into the blue and green (driver and passenger door) lock cylinder control wires and otherwise that looks about the same.

If you can have both cars side by side and you've pulled the interior out of your 87 then this looks to be doable.

If you can find a gasser 124 sedan from the second gen I suspect there are lots of neat things you can transplant to your wagon. Even better if you can find a TE wagon.

Have you tred the open function? After you close the windows & sunroof with the key, wat a few seconds ten hold the key in the unlock position. Windows open but not the sunroof.

I wish MB had installed this into the late W126s as well. The power window and sunroof wiring is vastly different. In a W124 your best bet would be to get the entire harness from a donor car. A W126 would require more work :(

I have tried the open function. My sunroof does not open no matter when - it is broken.

It will pop up at the back, just not open. When I use the open function with the key it will pop the back of the sunroof.

I am debating fixing the sunroof, but I do not want to mess with it until I get my diesel up and running and my daily driver. Then I can fix that kind of stuff on the gas car.

I kind of want to keep this thread alive for a couple of reasons.

1) I still intend to add this to my 1987.
2) I want to keep a little bit of a log of doing this.

So far I have pulled 2 modules and wiring harnesses at this point. One of them came from a 1993 E320 Wagon and the other from a 1994 E300D Sedan.

The wiring harness from the wagon is about 85-90% complete. I ran out of time and cut the wires on the passenger side.

The wiring harness out of the sedan is probably 99%. I only cut 3 wires I did not know exactly where they went. It was about 7 hours of work to get the harness out. 18 pounds of wiring harness.

I figure it will probably be 100-200 hours of work to really graft this in. I am going to unwrap the complete harness and trace each wire back to the module. I will do this over a few weeks in my garage floor this spring and summer.

If you have motorized seats, the controls are different between pre-90 and 90-up 124s, or maybe '89 is the cutoff year. It might be easier to swap seats than create a hybrid harness.

This is has nothing to do with the seats.

It is the windows mainly. It ties into the locking system as well, but mainly controls the windows. I have the seat harnesses, both types. I am not sure of the cut-off years. I have complete seats and harnesses from several different 124's and the comfort control never ties into any of those harnesses.

This brings up another point. I have always wondered if you replace the command module on the seat to match whatever the harness is would it work......

I have been pulling seats whenever I find good ones. And I usually pull the complete harness when I pull the seats now - all the way to the fuse box (which by the way is a pain).
