If visual aesthetics and ease of maintenance were the only issues in play, I could see the case for the W123. But there are other issues.
And I don't at all doubt that a really nice W123 can command a significant premium, even more so than a nice W124. My initial observations have to do with the VAST MAJORITY (not the exceptions). So when someone on CL advertises, say, an 1985 300D with 250k miles, decent interior and exterior, this and that don't work, and wants $5,000.....it just ain't gonna happen. These people are not living in reality.

I guess the dodo birds are all migrating to my area (Asheville, NC), because I see 123's on the road almost every time I go somewhere, many times I see ones that are new to me (haven't seen before). I just saw a nice 123 Coupe this morning that I had not seen before, less than a mile from my house. There are several shops here that work on them. CL always has some for sale (prices all over the place, but always seem high to me). I don't even really pay attention to 124's or anything newer, as they just look like any other car on the road to me.
I enjoy my 123 wagon. |

fine, send all the w123s here, plenty of mechanics work on them, lots of parts, people enjoying them, etc. hardly ever see a 124 or 201 diesel, saw a single 190d in the last two years

The W123 is an unassailable styling classic, but I gotta say the styling of the W124 is a little too understated for me. I kind of fell in love with the W210 and even though it's been a real bear getting it sorted out, I still smile when I approach it in a parking lot.

In my house I still have an actual honest to goodness analog phone line. The following devices are connected to it. All of them function and ring. When the phone rings at my house there is no doubt the phone is ringing.
- a 1939 WE model 302 (the "I Love Lucy" desk phone, bakelite and zinc) - a 1960s WE model 554 (the "Happy Days" style kitchen wall phone) - a 1966 WE model 1702 ("Princess") in pink, this was the first touch tone phone that has no * and # keys, only the 10 digits - a late 70s WE 2702 ("Princess") in beige, this one has the modular handset and the * and # keys - an early 80s WE 2220 ("Trimline") in beige with the LED lights So in addition to my Mercedes collection I have a bit of a WE phone collection too.
