1987 300TD Wagon - Lift Points
I have a friend who's family has a lift in their outbuilding (rated to 7,000Lbs). They have told me that I may be able to use it from time to time to do maintenance and other work on my car.
I will most likely have to use it in the evenings and on weekends. It is a two post lift. Since it will be me alone out there I wanted to know where are the best spots to lift from on the 1987 300TD Wagon or the 1990 300TE Wagon? In the past I have just used a lift like this on Volkswagon Bugs and had someone else with me who owned the lift set up the lift arms. Should I just use the jack points or is there some point farther in that is better? Thanks.

I don't know the answer for sure, but an idea would be to goto a chain store that offers free break inspections and watch where they place the lift oints.....maybe?

NO...
do NOT attempt to support this vehicle on a lift by yourself!!! lifts can be very dangerous. it's easy for one to slip off, flip out, crumple from rust and kill you. there are several spots that shops use to lift the wagon, but many lifts are different. some have rubber plates to support the vehicle, some have metal "fingers" that slide into spots on the vehicle, some have pucks similar to floor jacks that cup spots on the vehicle... I'd first recommend you take pictures of the arms of the lift you intend to use, and make sure to compare them to the arms of the shop you take the car to for the "inspection" BE CAREFUL!!!!

I do not have a death wish.
Usually when I have used a lift before I have lifted it only about 1 or 2 inches off the ground at first and then pushed as hard as possible on each side to see if it would move at all. In this case I will most likely try and get a friend of mine to tag along the first couple of times I use it and I will also try and track down someone with some previous experience. I will be very careful - I was just hoping to get some insight on good points to start with. I find it better to ask for information ahead of time rather then at the moment I need it......

I always lifted my 87 wagon right under the jack points. There are rubber pads there just for this purpose. I do the couple inch rule too -- lift it, shake and rock as hard as i can and if it feel stable, go up with it. Every benz i've had has had these pads to lift the car by.
Maybe some lifts you have to put the arms in a different place though.

There is also the front u channels. Jack pads are the way to go.
