It is possible to get the aluminum in afterwards if the rubber has the groove. I watched Safelite do the windshield that way on my 83 about 4 years ago when I was not aware of the FSM procedure. It took him 3 or 4 attempts and many hours and it ended up looking like crap and leaked. I had to go back to Safelite multiple times for them to apply urethane sealant to stop the leaks. It helped some but was never totally dry, which contributed to that car's rust issues, as you are well aware of.

wow, you just explained to me why I destroyed that windshield accidentally trying to push it out on that 83.

It was glued in there, no wonder.

Well this explains why my window trim looks like crap. Someone must have took a rubber hammer to it. Where can I find some new stuff?

i had a rock hit my windshield in my W123 wagon.

Insurance company sent out a glass guy to replace the windshield. he brought a new Mercedes seal and PGW glass. However since my original seal wasn't cracked on the exterior he re-fused to replace the seal with new. I told him that the seal was 30 years old and if it is re-used with new glass it will leak, he still refused. He said he would seal it with silicone, i said absolutely not, never was silicone in there and it will not be put in there. he assured me the old seal would not leak.

Next day we have bad rainstorm and it leaks bad in the bottom corner. after a huge drawn out argument with him and insurance company he is going to come out friday and install the new seal.

Common sense tells you a 30 year old piece of rubber isnt going to re-seal to well in a new position.

Dealer - take heart restarting equipment for after hearing about the price though...

Junk yard - often scratched and knackered when removed...

When I read all these stories I know I did the right thing when I had MB of Huntington (LI) do the windshield replacement on my signature car.

The windshield is in, and from my reading on here after the fact, he should have installed the trim before putting the windshield in the car and used rope to reinstall (which he did without the trim). Do I have to take it back out, or is it possible to push the trim in using soap and water?

this is a PITA, I know. Please don't remind me I paid someone 300 bucks and it isn't done. Im willing to struggle with it, but I don't want to break the windshield.
The trim must be installed before the assembly is installed.

It must now be removed, to install correctly.

All depends on condition. I reused the old rubber on my 85 since it was pliable and not dry rotted. Preparation is everything, just make sure it's clean before you install it.

my local safelite put in a new front windshield for me and seal. I brought them the car with no windshield. the guy immediately knew to put the seal on the glass, then the trim in then install the windshield.

They did try to tell me that the trim wont go in because "these older cars are near impossible to work on anymore" The one old guy said maybe if I could move the dash he could move the seal to allow the lower trim piece to sit in the groove. They weren't expecting it but I took the whole dash out in a few minutes and they were able to get in no problem.

Still $400 dollars is a lot to spend for me to have to do some work but I needed to drive the car.

safelite is returning tomorrow afternoon to remove and reinstall with the trim. Ill see how it goes, they were very responsive and helpful. In the meantime, I also have a state inspection first thing in the morning, so hopefully nothing happens to the glass IF i get a sticker for this vehicle

What brand seal are you using? Hopefully it's either CRP or true MB, and not URO.

I would be curious as to the long term use of the Safelite glass. I heard they are a little soft.

Im not sure what they used. Im assuming it was probably one of the cheaper ones.

here is the original seal- the existing windshield was not original, this car came out of NH, so temp stress fractures are pretty common. The seal was pretty bad though-
you can also sort of see the wigglyness of the trim, it was definitely removed and reinstalled

here is the trim after I screwed around rebending it for a while-

and the trimless rubber gasket. anything about the way it looks that might indicate who makes it? looks ok to me, little narrow in the corners though
