Ask Safelite who makes the seal. If the rubber does not have the trim retainer groove, he won't be able to put them on.

If you have a scrap aluminum trim, cut a 1 inch section as a groove feeler on the new and old rubber. You'll be able to feel if it catches or not.

It is, maybe a week after I had mine installed....a rock flew up and put a star in it.....royally peed me off......I went back to safelite and they repaired the star free of charge...

It's OK I'm getting there slowly. I'm not sure I'll be keeping it for long though.

Alternatives to the chrome strips around the windshield. - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

somebody did exactly what stretch and I were talking about. Very enticing photos, thank for the link!

I even still have my fleet maintence window rubber strip install tool. The safelite guy is supposed to be here later today, if he doesn't get it installed, rubber strip is the next plan

wow.

I don't even know what to say. They sent a guy out who didn't want to use the aluminum strips I have, because they were too bent looking to him. I sort of cautiously quizzed him, and taking the windshield out and putting it back in with the trim installed according to the FSM was not even close to his plan, he intended to try and pop the trim in as I had been doing, by pushing it into the slot with the windshield installed.

He said he has been doing this for 15 years, would not hear of removing the windshield. Whats clear is that if I want the trim in, safelite won't be doing it, im going to have to do it myself.

The other thing he was saying is that he could run glue around the inside of the trim against the windshield to prevent it from leaking. I had to argue against that (knowing that at this point I was just trying to get him to leave)

That's a bit frustrating - I had a similar experience with a windscreen fitter once who said it wasn't his fault that the trim he took out was no longer usable. Apparently it was my fault for having an old car. {Yes mate you're still a BLEEPing tosser - you are not forgiven!}

The annoying part is the trim I took out is totally usable. Its if anything, straighter and more true than it was when it was actually installed around the windshield that was in there previously.

Despite years of experience, these guys just don't know how to install a gasket type windshield is the problem. Ive given up on this branch of safelite for this. I don't want to have guys appear here that don't have any idea on how to install this trim properly, and don't know/care what the factory method is because they have been installing glue in windshields for years.

The worst part is no other windshield people are interested in correcting the problem for me, all saying (rightly I think) that there is definitely a chance they could break an aftermarket replacement windshield trying to remove it again, and I should just buy a new one from them.

The guy Ive used a number of times won't touch it because I think he's insulted I didn't wait for him to order one in (needing to pass inspection before the time limit)

Im going to hang onto the trim, but I am going to try the rubber gasket trick we both know first to lock the dam thing in. That way I don't risk breaking this new windshield that also happens to have a brand new inspection sticker on it.

They have been extremely courteous and professional so far and very responsive, they just don't know how to do it. Im annoyed, but I won't whack them with that kind of attack until im truly angry about this.

My strategy is not to file an official style complaint like that until a company is both non-responsive and did not complete the job. These guys came back almost immediately, offered a number of services that are wrong, and the guy even came back a 3rd time 15 minutes later saying he would be happy to glue it in for me any time, also wrong, but I appreciate their attempt to do right by me.

Its not really an issue of me being truly angry, its one of guys who mean well, but just don't know how to do it. Im only at middling yelp review stage, which explains my impression of this service. Nice guys, mean well, don't call them with an old gasket windshield.

Contact BBB and have it figured out! They will file a report, I did that with PayPal.....when a customer was trying to scam me and PayPal refused to return my money....they ended up refunding every penny.....thanks to the BBB complaint.....easy to do on the net....
