What does the Bowden cable do in my 1984 300D W123?

Does it have something to do with the cruise control?

the bowden cable can affect shift times. To lose and early shift to tight no downshifting. They strech over time so a 30 year old car might need adjustment

Hm. So why does this 1981 300TD Euro Turbo w/automatic not have one?

Earlier transmissions were purely speed/vacuum controlled for shift points. They added the bowden cable to later revisions to improve the shift point control.

Also you said euro-turbo. No euro models came with a 617 turbo, only non-turbo. You sure thats the original engine?

Turbo versions of the OM617 (OM617a) were fitted to the W116 with a 722.120 transmission - this used a solid rod linkage between the transmission and the throttle linkage to help decide upon modulating pressure.

By the time the W126 was fitted with an OM617a they were using 722.303 transmissions which had the Bowden cable set up together with a vacuum dashpot set up.

Towards the end of the first gen W126 300SDs they apparently used 722.416es

When the OM617a was fitted to the W123 chassis it used the 722.315 for most of its life except for the last year where some 722.303s were fitted instead.

For the W123 OM617 non-turbos they started out with the 722.118 with a rod linkage much like the 722.120 fitted to the W116 SD. Then they went "vacuum only" where there was no direct linkage to the throttle (still a 722.118 transmission though - confusing eh?)

In the last years of the W123 non-turbo OM617s they went for a 722.405 that had Bowden cable and a dashpot like the turbo 722.3 transmissions fitted to the turbos...

I just noticed that I never responded that yes, Euros did come with Turbos.

Looks like the bowden cable is attached to the bracket near the firewall.

No that's the throttle control....specifically the arrow points to the throttle pivot bushing.....I also FYI people to look really close at them....they rot and no one ever replaces them....
