The only way a 123 TD will get 36 mpg is if the odometer is off, going downhill from Flagstaff to Phoenix or if it's being sold on Craigslist or Ebay.

Wow this thread got all bent out of shape and I didn't did it this time

I don't know why you would get only 27mpg from a turbo......I get regularly 24 on my non turbo and the best I did was 27......maybe its because I maintain my car with a fine tooth comb...

I usually get 25-26 with in town driving and up to 28-29 on the highway. I used to get a little above 24 when I first got mine but that was before I adjusted the valves and fixed some leaks and other minor adjustments. Mercedes probably made some engine and transmission improvements since your 78 or maybe the euros are slightly lighter?

get this model

Make sure the head gasket is intact, keep the transmission serviced (filter/fluid) and never look back. Get one with r134 refrigerant. Every now and then you have to replace the evaporator which is pretty good job.

I used to own a 92 FJ80. I sold it 3 years ago. That was a great truck in the Snow. Very under powered but has some serious grip in the snow. I bought it in 2003, and sold it in 2010 for the same price I bough it for. Good Luck

Just diesel swap the FJ. Thats how i ended up here. Get 12mpg from my Land Rover, got a bellhousing/crankshaft adapter for an OM603 conversion. Problem is most adapters are for the 617, which (again, let the hating begin) is probably underpowered for a SUV. Not sure if the 80 is AWD like my Rover, because that saps power also.

BTW. My Discovery is riding on FJ80/(LX450?) Coils! (Probably the only good part on the FJ) ok, i'll stop

Have you considered using wrenches, screwdrivers, and sockets? Might have better results than with that comb!!
