Scam going on there. Hatch says 'Turbo diesel'. 79's weren't turbo'd. Wheels aren't right for a 79 either.

I'm still skeptical. I'd want to the see the build sheet. Was a turbo head with sls pump available in 79? The fact that the interior changed color in the meantime is also suspicious. Shouldn't have an EGR on a 79 turbo engine. Are there pictures of the engine compartment?

I find it odd, that the only pics in the ebay auction are the same ones as in the article...

Same here. I'd think you would have tons of pictures... at least one of the interior!

Evergreen. This thing made the rounds back in, I'll say 2005-2006 when I was on one of the mbz.org lists. Generated a lot of discussion and argument. I see in the description they claim it has been at that 'museum' since about then.

Next will be Janis Joplin's TD. Wait for it....

The one I regret not even having taken a shot at was the w116 wagon. Yes, one of the few. Believe it or not, many years ago when w116s weren't in favour, it sold for a few thousand on eBay.

I did some searching and could not find a single period photo online of him riding in/being around the car....seems suspicious. For someone with his level of fame, there'd be piles of pictures from the year he was riding around in that car....and yet in a search the only pictures that appear are the suspicious ones from that article. I also highly doubt anyone would change the color of the car to beige from his unique green.

According to the Russian VIN site it is a...

...John Lemmon

Just stick WDB in front of the VIN given in the advert and you get a hit.

NON TURBO OM617.912

May be this was owned by a guy who married Yoko Homo?

I thought that story seemed very unlikely.

If he had owned a 300TD there'd be 50,000 pictures of it taking place in 1979.

From what I found, he owned two MB's in his life, a 600 Pullman (makes much more sense) and a 230SL

Would be interesting to actually see pictures of the engine.'Turbodiesel' on the hatch proves nothing.
My '84 Euro TD says 'turbodiesel', but it's not. A PO replaced the hatch.

I agree but the cocked up story about him special ordering a turbo'd engine makes me suspect there is a turbo under that hood. What's the deal with no chrome strips on the roof for the rack?

I imagine the interior of the car's been gone over with a fine tooth comb to find anything John may have inadvertently left in there (guitar pick, roach? :-)

I find it odd indeed that the distinctive original paint would have been painted over with a different color...

Oh well, it's still just another car, isn't it, no matter who sat in the back seat?...
