1980 240D half-shaft / CV boot at speed
 

Late last week I had the 240D loaded up for a camping trip and 80 miles from home, doing 65 on the highway, my right-side passengers noticed a vibration in the floorboards. A squeaking noise came from the right rear. I slowed down and took the next exit and inspected the half-shaft. The CV boot had torn open and there was lubricant everywhere.

I had the vehicle towed home. Do I replace the half-shaft? Both of them?

I would replace both of them....if they are not clunking....you maybe able to just reboot them....I believe there is a member on here that sells rebuilt axles....can't remember his name off hand...

FYI....you didn't have to be towed....could have driven home.....I drove home with one so bad it sounded like someone was shooting a cannon off.....drove 100+ miles home.....duct tape is your friend when they start too tear also...

I would definately replace the right side. no telling how long it was run with split open boot w/o lubercant. so most likely damage done to the joint.

If the Left looks good leave it alone. If there are small cracks, that might be age cracks of the rubber drying out. It might run you a couple more years that way. If there are deep cracks, then I would definately change it out or reboot it.

I have come across good Axles in the yards all the time. The one`s under our 240 are new one`s I found at different times.

Mine did the same thing and I ended up replacing both. They were originals with 230K+ on them, which is a pretty good sevice interval IMO. It's not a bad job to DIY.

It seems like I should do both. These have unknown mileage on them. Thanks for the advice. I may need some tips on doing the work when I get them. I'll hit up VSTECH.

The motor on this car purrs at idle and makes 80 mph no problem. It may be destined for a new body.
