Hehe. I saw a very similar text of a Metro vs. Festiva race... entertaining in any case

That post reminds me of the time I tried to race an 86 ford escort with the 2.0 diesel against a late 80s corolla import diesel down an empty dead end road to see which one was actually faster. 50hp vs 60ish hp, but the 50hp had a stick. All action and tension trying to get ahead of eachother, tons of racket, and we felt like we were in a nascar race in the cabins, and we got out and were laughed at when we explained we were actually racing.

The spectators (all 3) thought we were just slowly driving the road to get a feel for it.

Those old VW buses are death traps. I'd take a 240d over one any day!

My two daily drivers are the '97 E300d and a '97 Geo Metro LSi. Now, I must clarify that the LSi happens to be the "big block" Geo - it has ALL FOUR cylinders! I don't remember the hp rating, but the car is actually pretty quick since it's so light. It doesn't seem slow, at least.

And, if the intake flaps are feeling like working the E300 doesn't feel slow, either. I've seen a lost of posts on here saying they are slow, but I think it does a pretty good job.

Now, my 1984 Ford Ranger Diesel defined slow! Before I added a turbo it was almost painful to drive. The worst insult I had in it was trying to pass a tractor trailer in a headwind at 65mph on the interstate. I had caught the truck (very slowly) on a slight downhill, then tried to pass ass the road levelled out. As soon as I pulled into the left lane out of the draft I lost a full tractor-trailer length! I was able to catch him again, but not able to pass...

Different vehicles for different uses. A Geo has every bit as much performance as a pickup truck or my GTO - In the niche it was designed for, which is economy instead of speed or hauling capacity. Your 240 is the same, designed for economy and longevity.

Okay now, fess up. Did it SOUND like the original VW or was it built up?

I seem to recall in the old days you could get aftermarket stuff to build up those old aircooled things into near-Porsche spec.

However, if it was wheezing and buzzing as it went by... hang your head, dude .

Here I am expecting a 220D or 200D (or even a 60's 190D) passing you.

Who cares if you're enjoying your ice cold AC and driving at a relaxed pace (and are not in the left lane)?

It actually looked stock, as there was no evidence of aftermarket exhaust (a dead giveaway of performance upgrades). The bus was around the late 70's, so it might have had a 1600. However, my 240 is no slug either. I believe it is as fast as an N/A 5 cyl with automatic. I have driven both, and my 240 seems more peppy than it should be. That still does not take away the insult!

It was in the morning, and I did not have the A/C on. I bet if I was side by side at the next light, there would be a race!

I race people daily in my 220D at the stoplights... but the problem is I don't think the person in the next lane even knows we are racing.

Late 70's bus will have a 2.0 VW spec type 4 / Porsche 914 engine. 71 was the last year for the bug 1600.

In the late 80's I had:

1970 bus walk through + sun roof

1970 bus 3 person front seat

1970 bus Westfalia camper Laid on its side my by brother, . . at 35 MPH . . , on a shopping center access road . . through a corner that was flat. ( There was a witness.. . ) a week after I had painted it. . Other than some paint scrapes it was unharmed, even the side mirror was not broken.

1973 bus bad motor, sold off before I had a chance to do anything with it.
