1987 300TD Throttle Linkage

The throttle linkage on my 1987 300TD went out on me last night, and a very helpful fellow happened by and managed to get it back together again for me, but he had to superglue the plastic sockets that thread onto the metal rod in the linkage to do it. They're both cracked, and who knows how long that glue will hold, so I need to replace them as soon as possible. Why they would use plastic for a thing like that is beyond me. I've been looking around at various sites for replacements, and I'm a little confused. First of all, does anyone have any recommendations on where to get these? I'm looking at this one right now. Metal seems like it would be far superior to plastic, but are metal ones acceptable for this car? Also, what's the difference between right hand thread and left hand thread? Since I'm replacing both sockets, do I need one of each? One place I found has left hand thread sockets listed, but they're out of stock; other than that, I haven't seen any others.

Thanks!

sorry, you cannot link to competing parts sites on this forum.

I edited your post to include a pic of the part you were asking about.

I do not think it will work in place of the plastic ends unless you build a threaded rod to replace the link the plastic is connected to.

The plastic one lasted ~25 years. Do you expect your car to be still going in another 25 years?
Best you jump on the Pelican & get the proper one !!

Does Pelican sell the plastic throttle linkage ends? I need some and I couldn't find any the other day I looked.

In fact - I couldn't find anyone selling them.

Sorry about that, didn't realize that wasn't allowed. I couldn't find these anywhere on Pelican, though; if they're there and I've somehow missed them, I'd appreciate it if someone could direct me to them. I have found a few sites claiming to sell official Mercedes ones, but no site ever specifies whether they're metal or plastic.

The entire cable assembly, from the pedal to the rack lever, is available as p/n 124 300 28 30

This is a special order from MB, so you can have Pelican order it for you or do it yourself from your local MB parts counter.

The only things you have to remove are the lower dash cover on the drivers side and the windshield washer bottle.

If you need a link to the Factory Service Manual go to www.w124-zone.com and register. The cable replacement procedure is in chapter 30 (hence the "300" in the second set of digits in the part number).

Assuming you are in the US, go to starkekinfo.com and register for EPC. It is free but you do have to put up a credit card just to validate you are in the US. It will do a temp auth of a $1 but will not bill you. This is the same system the parts counter uses to find your parts. They know based on your VIN exactly what was put into your car at the factory.

Oh BTW welcome!

There are several of us on the forum with 87 300TDs so if you have any questions ask away!

Off the top of my head here are 4 others:
- vstech
- pwogaman
- babymog
- jbrianfoto

All 4 of us are on the east coast. I'm sure there are others across the country.

If it's a socket end on a threaded rod, raid older 300Ds at a junk yard for metal socket ends.

You need LH and RH threaded ends if you're going to reuse the rod because the rod is threaded that way. If you're fabricating a rod, you can use the same thread on both ends but you won't be able to adjust the length without removing the link. No biggie.

Is the piece that broke off located under the dash, that attaches to the rod coming off the pedal?

Thanks so much for your help, guys!

No, the broken pieces are under the hood; it's the linkage between the metal piece that holds the end of the cable from the accelerator and the throttle. There's a metal rod between the two that's threaded on both ends, and threaded onto either end is a plastic socket which fits over balls on each side of the link. Sorry if I'm not getting the terminology quite right. Those sockets are both cracked and need to be replaced. I figured that one was probably right-hand and the other left-hand. So I need one of each; that's good to know.

If that's the case then follow sixto's advice and go to the junk yard and find a wrecked 123. Salvage the old metal sockets and exchange them for the cracked cr*p plastic sockets.

Just be sure to grab some LH and RH threaded ends and the jam nuts.

If you can get access to EPC have a look at:
Maj. Assy M - Engine/07 Injection Pump/180 Control used with automatic trans.
and see if you can locate your broken parts in the picture.

It appears the rods are sold only as an assembly (shaft, 2 ends, 2 jam nuts).
