85 300D fuel filter

I changed both fuel filters on my 300D and notice that on you screw on filter ther large bolt in the middle was turning. I put the filter on and tightened it and now it seems to be leaking around the bolt. Any ideas on how to fix this?

You might need a new washer

Can I get a new washer at the auto parts and if so what size/type? I'm guessing you just back that center bolt all the way out and put the new washer on correct? Do I have to replace the fuel filter again after

It depends on how the bolt is sealed. Some use a washer, some use an "O" ring. My signature car originally had the washer, and I changed the filter housing with an '84 parts car to use the "O" ring style. It virtually eliminates the possibility of leaks.

Since you have an 85 300D you will find the Filter Bolt has 2 different sized O-rings that may need to be replaced.

Occasionally someone finds there Filter Mount is warped and nothing will seal it.

The good news is that if your Filter Mount is warped they do not cost much at a Pick Your Part type Junk Yard.

I don't think it's warped because it didn't start leaking until I changed the filter. I noticed it was turning when I was tightening the filter and thought that was weird. And that is when I noticed it leaking. Thanks for the info fellas

Since you have the 85 300D. the part # on the filter housing should be 615 092 02 06. this one has the 2 "O" rings on the bolt shaft. You do not need a washer under the bolt head.

The older style filter head is part # 615 092 01 06, and this one uses the washer under the bolt head, and I think one "O" ring.

It could just be the "O" rings need replacing.

Put a wrench or Socket on the bolt and screw on the filter, then tighten with the tools.

I take it, this wasn`t leaking before the filter change?

Sounds like a simple issue....

OP doesn't realize, that you turn the nut to break the filter free.....you then install said filter by screwing it onto the nut....till it doesn't screw on anymore....

Then you tighten the nut down, till it is tight to seal the filter on....

Confirm plastic wrap is off filter and also confirm the large o ring is on top of the filter.....

Everything with the filter was good and y'all are correct, I didn't realize that you used the bolt to loosen the filter. This makes me feel much better. So, in theory, I should be able to just tighten the bolt on top and that should take care of it. Because the filter and bolt were not leaking prior to this.

The O-rings need to be replaced every 2 - 3 filters, after that point they tend to leak.

Here is the kit I use for many O-rings.
O-Ring Assortment Pack - 397 Piece Metric O-Ring Assortment

The kit I suggested works fine.
They generally degrade after roughly 2 - 3 filter changes, about the same life as MB O-rings.
