Wish I had an adjustment for smoke . Mine just blows white clouds on startup and for a mile or two when hitting the pedal, after that it's gone. No coolant use, some oil use. Between new nozzles, ip timing done, purge, etc, I'm down to 'it just wants to'. Man I can't wait until I finish the 240D.

^^^^ I will by that snake oil, tell me when you have a cure
Mine has started to puff on start up and a little bit till its warmed up....sometimes I will start and no smoke, other times white...then a puff of black...sometimes no black puff and very little white smoke.... Only thing I have left I can do is another IP timing....other wise car runs great and decent milage....so I don't care about my smoke screen on start up

What you describe pretty much rules out antifreeze -- it smells so sweet you feel like you're going to get a sugar high just from smelling it (you won't, you'll get poisoned instead). If it smells like the kind of fuel you put in the tank, then it's unburnt fuel. Depending on additives, and the wide variety of stuff people put in their tank these days, diesel fuel can have different smells. Smell the tank, smell the exhaust smoke, if they smell very similar, then its unburnt fuel. "Smells like exhaust smoke" is a little ambiguous in this context . If it smells like the smoke you've smelled from other smoky exhausts, then it's probably oil smoke. There's a lot of variability in what that smells like, but most people claim it stinks, and it definitely doesn't smell sickly sweet nor like the fuel they put in their tank. BTW, you will eventually want to address that under hood exhaust leak. Not really a good thing to have an exhaust leak upwind of the cabin air intake.

Sounds like bad valve guide seals or loose guides. Oil is seeping into the combustion chambers and burning on startup. Running the engine blows it out.
If the car is using oil and not leaking it there's another good indicator.

Any chance the fix could be a simple as replacing my thermostat? The engine only gets up to about 60 c. I thought I'd replace that and see if the heat started working in my car again and to get the engine back up to 80c.
If the engine isnt getting hot enough, could the smoke be unburnt fuel? |
