Is water pump failure on 82 300TD catastrophic?!

I was looking seriously at purchasing an '82 300TD wagon from local CL. Was going to see it the next day when the Owner notified me that it broke down on him and he had to have it towed. He stated that the Water Pump went out on it... "easy fix" according ot him, but doesn't that mean the engine most likely overheated as a result (i.e. Head Gasket failure) - otherwise, how would you know something is wrong?!

I like this wagon a lot, but it has a strange VIN number (discussed at length on the Craigslist threads here - seems legit, though strange, nevertheless.

The owner is replacing the water pump on, but I sense that the water pump failure means more trouble than meets the eye.

Here is the original ad: 1982 Mercedes 300DT WAGON

Here are more pics of the wagon:

Hate to pass on it, but I sense this maybe only a tip of the iceberg ahead.

Someones telling you something.....don't buy that wagon!

I wouldn't take this wagon if it was free......someone is hiding something by switching the vin plate, filling in the vin under the hood.....and having other parts of a car welded to it.....

It may have have over heated if the pump went out, its hard to say....

But if it was me I would walk far away from it....

Could be just minor but it also could be much more. I seem to remember that car on Craigslist in Denver about a year ago. I'd be more concerned about the funky VIN.

Water Pump wise it all depends on how long it too Him to notice it was overheating while it was driving; how long after that he continued to drive.

I have also had an Engine overheat due to a leaking Water Pump and the overheating loosened Crud in the Block and it partially plugged up the Radiator.

I have learned the hard way: whenever issues pile up before the sale, or during, inevitably they never end (or so it can seem) after. As I believe in karma, I ought to have learned my lesson first time. However, I am also stubborn, so the lizard brain doesn't listen to the thinking one once I have my teeth into another car.

I have paid for that in time, aggravation and $$$$, not to mention a friend with a tow dolly just about being arrested in the U.S. when he tried to pick up a car I had paid for. (SUCH a deal!)

If you have that level of doubt, walk away and live to buy another day. It isn't like it's special, or the last 300td in the US....

Possible overheating from a bad water pump=not really a big deal on this cast iron engine.

Hinckey VIN plate=huge problem. Stolen? Illegally imported? Who knows. Run away. Run away!
