Well you are basically going to "gut" the footwell area when you pull the HVAC cabinet - (you'd be amazed how much more room there is when it's out!). That exposes the inside of the firewall and also the tranny tunnel is uncovered - get some dynamat self-stick (what I used; there are others you can even use a ductwork sealant from Home Depot that is looks like it is the same stuff but costs much less).

Does it make a dramatic difference? It gets pretty noisy in my car riding at highway speeds.

Yeah it really does make a difference. A good hood pad would help too if yours is shot like most of them are. By the way that's a beautiful car - wish mine were that clean.

I'm not the OP so you might be confusing his car with mine.

I was just wondering about the sound dampening. I don't have any hood pad I am waiting for a repaint and then I will put a new one in.

The car is clean, just took these this weekend.

I won't be tearing the dash apart, but will probably tackle a compressor R&R. I'll get the gauges and recharge it with R12 then.

What about this 'enviro' freon stuff - uses half as much? Flourocarbon? Half propane and butane? Or just stick with R12?

ES works well, but it's illegal in the US...

WOW, that car is clean!
only 4 speed eh?

you realize that radio is likely worth what you paid for the car... Becker Mexico's are PRICEY!!!

do you have the manuals that came with the car? I'd LOVE to see a Becker Mexico user manual... auto tune and all... wow.

I also STRONGLY recommend that if you ever see a hazzard switch in a parts yard like yours you PULL IT!!! they are NLA, and VERY VERY VERY expensive to replace... (thousands of dollars) and without it, you have no turn signals...

oh, and pull all your hubcaps. make sure they all have the plastic clips on them. the steel clips will damage your wheels.
I'm assuming you have the original aluminum "hubbie" wheels... if you do, there will be a broken white circle around the perimeter of the bolt pattern bulge...

I think the legality of ES is a gray area. Enviro-Safe FAQ - Is it legal to use Enviro-Safe™ Refrigerant in automotive applications?

LOL. I thought a few pix might pique your interest.

Perhaps you can see why I want the AC working.

The radio is the Becker 'Corona'. AM FM radio was one of the factory options. Actually I think they put radios in these things at the dock, no? Or were they factory installed? Manual antena, but the radio works great.

I have all the paperwork from new, but don't recall seeing anything specific on the radio. The factory window sticker is even in there.

It came with steel wheels but had an aluminum for a spare, so I found an enthusiast with 4 of the narrower factory alloys and got them for cheap. And yeah, the caps still have the metal clips. Would be nice to change them out. The alloys are half the weight and make the car feel light on it's feet. Definitely improves the ride. Not that these things ride bad anyway.

the dealer should have the plastic clips, they are easy to swap in... actually, I need to get a couple sets for my cars...

I'll check with the dealer in the morning if they have them, or can order them.

Yep, you're right, it's a Europa. I just went out to the garage and looked.

I dunno what I was thinking...must be something else. So yeah, basic am-fm. But $250 for a replacement? Wow.

The car is virtually flawless. It needs a few things to be concours, but it wouldn't take much. The undercarriage needs to be detailed, and it needs a windsheild - has pitting from age. Probly the original glass. No interior flaws though, just the 'pucker mouldings' which I choose to ignore. Under the carpets are completely dirt and dust free, not a spec of rust in the entire car.

Just a nick or two outside that have been touched up. Mostly chips can be filled in and polished out - it's single stage paint, original of course. Never had body damage, completely original and unmolested. All of the trim is flawless, as it is mechanically.

Well, except for the AC now.

These guys are in Michigan and have the 'enviro-safe' refrigerant, 12a. Is this the propane/butane stuff that seems to be reported to work so well? Works with all oils, cheap, and cold?

Refrigerant, freon, freeze 12, envirosafe, freon replacement, hydrocarbon refrigerants
