Any suggestions on how or what to use to clean?

Got a case of shop towels and some spray on degreaser, but it uses water to rinse off, and didn't know if that would be safe.

EDIT: Tried disconnecting bolt on other side, worked on it for 30 mins - isn't moving at all. Moving on to other projects.

So, getting ready to do the clean up and notice more oil had leaked and had hit the hood and ran down the drivers side to the headlight!

But where is it coming from? Had the hood open with the engine running, but didn't see any (obvious) squirting oil.

Could it be where cooljjay said it was coming from?

You have a lot of oily mess on the engine, I want to say you have a diesel leak somewhere....probably the return lines....may also have a bad valve cover gasket....I would look into it...

Have you removed your hood pad? It'll drip and make a mess for MONTHS

I'd not waste cans of brake spray on it... go to a quarter car wash...

Spongy hood pad was removed years ago.

No quarter car wash places here, only one drive through type.

Seriously, this place is a just a rock in the middle of the Pacific ocean.

... ah...
can you get ahold of a power washer? the electric kind is not too powerful and it'd clean it all up quickly...
but if you are STILL getting oil on things, I'd CLOSELY inspect the oil cooler lines...

Take some more photos of your engine and I should be able to zoom in and find the spot....if it is indeed black oil....and stating where you are noticing it.....I would venture it to be your oil cooler or oil cooler lines.....the oil thermostat doesn't open till 257°f so it wouldn't show a leak till the car was nice n hot...

no electric power washer - water won't cause damage?

Engine has been running slightly hotter, around 200 instead of the usual 178 or so. I thought it was because the engine was covered in oil, and thus insulating the heat.

Where is the oil cooler or oil cooler lines?

Gonna take some pictures now.

Your engine is very oily, its hard to tell where it may be coming from....there are a lot of things on that side of the engine that can cause an oil leak, it could even be the power steering lines. I can tell you probably need a valve cover gasket and it looks like something on the front is leaking maybe the main seal. What weight oil do you use? The oil cooler is easy to locate. It is right next to the radiator on the drivers side, you will then see 2 lines that run to the oil filter housing. There is a chance it could be the oil gauge line and there is also a line that runs oil to the injection pump, it is right under the spin on fuel filter...

The over heating is a sperate issue, most likely the radiator has dead spots and needs replacing.....if you have an auto trans, its possible it is over filled and overheating causing the temp to rise..

Replaced the radiator about 5 years ago - could it be failing already?

No auto trans here, everything is manual.

Perhaps I should clean it off best I can, then the leak can show up better.

Oil is Delo400, 15w 40. ( Hawaii, always hot). Supposed to be for diesel engines.

EDIT: Might be fuel, as cooljjay mentioned. Just cause it is liquid and dark, I can't assume it is oil.
Really appreciate the help, everyone.

Taking a longer look at this leak over this holiday weekend.

Cleaned up most of the black to see if the source becomes more evident.

First to leak oil was from the injector, or is it a valve?
But this was dripping down, thick and not what we're looking for, I think.

Then after a drive, the signs are:

Overrun on the hood outside, drivers side, over the headlight area. Looks too opaque to be oil.

Fuel filter areas seem tight, but the braided (fuel?) lines seem to look exceptionally moist. And again, the engine area on the drivers half looks wet, as if a mist or spray was shooting to the hood, then dripping down off the hood, running along the side, to the front of the hood.

Looked for any fuel lines that may have cracked, but nothing obvious was noted.

Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving - we all have plenty to be thankful for.

It may very well be your oil cooler lines or cooler....I would look at them very closely.....if your return lines are moist they are leaking and it may be adding to the leak...

Am trying to locate the oil cooler but pictures from the search don't look anything like my car?

Is it located near the radiator?
