It is on the drivers side of the radiator....I believe in the 240d both lines run to the bottom of the oil cooler and its half the size of a 300d oil cooler...

Ran the engine for any clues - revving it up made no difference.
Took a pic under the (big) fuel filter - still can't find the oil cooler. Then there is the residue on the drivers side, front. Am guessing it is running off the hood (inside), BWDIK? Too opaque to be oil. The one bolt near the 1st glow plug (notice I have the ground disconnected) had air bubbles coming out of it - very strange. Found a disconnected spring - don't know where the other side goes. I'm thinking I should send cooljjay some Kona coffee as a token for helping with this and past issues. |

]Mmmm I love coffee....stronger the better
You know I wonder if this is power steering fluid or brake fluid? Have you checked the two little rubber caps on the reservoir? And the power steering fluid? The oil cooler should be easy to see/find....if you look at the oil filter housing you will see the two hard lines coming out.....here's a photo of the oil cooler and location That disconnected spring is broken....it is suppose to go to the injection pump lever right above it....It also looks like someone has messed with the idle stop bolt which is a no no..... Here is how that spring is suppose to attach And this shows the hole it goes in For the life of me I cannot remember or find out what that bolt is for....I know I read about what it was somewhere.....but I can't find it now.....I want to say it could be tightened down because the bubbles are compression escaping by....but I don't want to say do that till I know what it is for..

Mystery solved!
The 2 rubber caps on the brake fluid reservoir were cracked. Level of the brake fluid was very low, too, as evidence. So now need to find the caps to replace. Also replaced the broken spring - easy. Thanks cooljjay. |

No problem, they sell the caps on auto haus az.....sure they carry them on here too....mine are cracked again....I pulled some plastic ones at the junkyard, they didn't fit but I see the changed to a newer design....I may just replace my hole tank so I will no longer need to deal with cracked caps...

Reluctantly, I'm semi-retiring the 240D because its too hard to get parts, and the rust is like a cancer. Got my old 91 300E back, so now that will be my daily driver.
But its a gasser and an automatic (), and has 193K miles, so it's gonna take maintenance, too. Don't even feel like I know how to drive an automatic, LOL! Wish I could replace the 300E's engine and transmission- oh well, a girl can dream, can't she? So, I'll be posting over at the (non-diesel) threads.... Yes, but they (diesel, manual, euro model) are pretty rare, I think.

Remember, I live in Hawaii, not on Oahu - somewhat remote and shipping can get expensive for big parts. Not like I can go to some pick and pull as easily as if I was on the mainland. So, I plan to continue to work on the 240D as time allows. Its become more of a restoration project, again. The good news is - some of the minor work that needs to be done on the 300E I'm already familiar with (did on the 240D) - if that can be considered good thing? |

Just checking in - time to do the other side.
I remember passing on that chore at the original time of this thread because it was rusted on too tight to remove. EDIT: PB Blasted 24 hours ago, still no budge. Took the wheel off hoping to get better leverage - no such luck and the inner bolt is starting to get rounded. Ready to go buy a deep socket 17mm, or any other suggestions? I have to LOL at the ones who say this is a 5 minute job....

Used Deep Creep this time with a socket wrench holding the inner bolt.
It finally worked...but inner bolt is looking half rounded. Gonna try to find one at Ace before it closes in 2 hours. Deep Creep folks, worked for me.
