I know I'm nit picking but this is one of my pet peeves.

That bolt is NOT stripped. The head is rounded. "Stripping" is a failure of the threads. As far as we can tell, the threads are OK.

(putting soapbox away) Good luck with this. If you had access to some electrical power I'd suggest cutting a slot thru the head to make a screwdriver slot, then attack with an impact screwdriver, a great and underutilized tool.

Dan

The bolt is mild steel. It is a piece of cake if you have an electric drill. BTDT. Not so sure with a battery operated drill. Use a reasonable quality 3/8" or 1/2" bit and drill down a little bit to weaken the bolt head, then snap the head off with a chisel or a bolt extractor. Or you can drill right down until the head comes off.

Good luck.

Wallyworld has a $99 1200amp battery box, you can use to power a drill to get the headbolt removed. or the 18v FUEL milwalkee impact drill is great with hardened impact bits. should take that bolt out in less than a minute...
matter of fact... I've got that drill, and have a 602 with blown out cam... I might try my hand at drilling out the bolt just for fun...

Well, success!! But it took some work. The yard was crushing the cars on this particular row so it was now or never. The loader operator held off on pulling the donor until I was done.

I tried the splined socket method, but the hand impact driver I was using just bent more of the bolt head. So no go that way.

Attempts to cut a groove and use the impact driver with a straight blade likewise failed.

As long as I had a good deep groove cut I though why not just keep cutting it until enough of the bolt head was gone so that I could slide the head off over it. So I eventually just started wacking the hell out of it with a bunch of different chisels and punches with the 4 pound hammer; and yes I did hit my hand a few times and it does hurt. Eventually, half of the bolt head cracked off and I got enough surface to start it twisting. I finally turned it all the way out. The process took all of about 3 1/2 hours as the sunburn on the back of my neck shows.

There is some damage to the area of the of the bolt head and the neighboring intake port. That is something a machine shop should be able to clean up if necessary.

Anyway, I got it out and the donor was wisked away to the crusher minutes later.

Here are some pictures of the head. Thank you so much to everybody for your suggestions.

Oh yeah, it set me back $62.52 (with the glow plugs; without the cam shaft, manifolds, or injectors). :-)

No, just the head. I can get an injector pump off a #14 headed donor later, when Congress puts me back on the payroll.

Pardon my lack of knowledge, but can somebody explain what the significance is of having a 17, 22, or 14 in the cylinder head part number? Just curious.

Head revisions. Wiki talk about it in their article on the om603.

And it's the cylinder head bare casting number. You won't find it as a part number in the EPC.

Congrats! I know nothing about the 602 as my OM617 was the right price and fits the displacement that my target class requires. Glad you best the crusher to it.

I'm a retired Federal employee and survived the last furlough (they told us it was a "furlough" that time). You'll have to wait for it but you will get all your pay so consider it a paid, non-AL or SL vacation. I was really annoyed that it didn't last longer - I think it was like 20 days +/-.
