Trunk Light????

Is there supposed to be a trunk light on my '85 300sd? There is a switch on the left side inside area of the decklid that has two spade-type terminals. Correct me if I am wrong, but is there supposed to be an interior light-style bulb in between the terminals?

There should be a bulb stuck between those spades.

And good idea on the extra trunk lights. I already put a nice LED lamp in my trunk... hm, I may have to persue further upgrades

I think it's a 10W bulb used for the tail lights, and I replaced the trunk light switch with a gray pin type. Pull the gray pin out to disable the switch, so you can work on the trunk without heating up the bulb.

The extra lighting, I tapped on to the existing trunk light, so I have an extra switch to trigger the corner trunk lights for added lighting, or turn them off when I don't need them. Pulling on the gray pin disables ALL trunk lights.

Extra switch is visible in photo above, near the base of trunk lid on lower right corner.

The idea was from a friend who has a W140, which are equipped with the additional trunk lights.

Had same question as OP.

I have had this car for 20+ years and knew it used to have a trunk light. But when I went looking, I could not find one! (until I read this thread!)

It surprises me that MB would just have a bare bulb between the two contacts, especially on a trunk lid. If it slammed shut, the bulb could jump out.

Was it really like than when new?

My SD trunk light has worked since I've owned it.

Is it just a festoon bulb held between two contact with no cover?

Yes. It's quite secure... you'd have to really wail on the trunk lid to knock it out.

Don't confuse the license plate lights with the trunk light. IIRC, the trunk light festoon bulb is a 10W unit, while the license plate lights (as well as the glove box light, but double check) are both 5W only. Same shape, but shorter.

There was no bulb in my trunk light - Must have fallen out! I found a festoon bulb amongst my boat spares and it fitted perfectly. Don't know how many watts, but it is not overly bright. Probably just as well, although right now my trunk is quite tidy

Still don't think that trunk light is up to MBs usual standards! But bulb is easy to change!

My license plate lights both work, but they were covered in oil and grime. Had some trouble finding them

Cleaned them off and they are fine.

Had this car for 23 years and still learning
