Video diagnosis

Thanks to Coolijay and the extensive DIY list I figured out the drip timing. It's (close, wife has counting issues : to 1 drip per sec at 24btdc. (sometimes it's two drips dear).

It was a stream at 24 so that's improvement I think. Rechecked the valves, even in 400 or so miles they were off again.

Still smoking and looks rough idle to me. Idle is 780, new damper bolt, new engine mounts.

Two videos, one of idle and 'clacking' noise, one of smoke.

I have heard the clacking noise can be from valves being to loose.....

As far as the smoke, that is interesting.....I would venture a guess it has something to do with the turbo?

Also looks like your air cleaner is lose....

Wouldja believe the air cleaner has 3 new rubber mounts and they are tight bottom and top.....

Engine is shaking that much.

Took the car for a ride and the smoking stopped entirely. Nothing at wot, nothing at startup.

Waited 5 minutes, started up, nothing. WOT......nada.

waited about 2 hours....lotsa smoke. Turbo? Valve guides? Drippy injector?

Hmm

Sounds like nailing to me, best guess injectors are fouled.

The rotary motion of the air cleaner looks like a loose or broken bracket, double check all three mount bolts.

You need to closely inspect the engine shocks and mounts.

Are you running straight #2 ? Around here it resembles the yellow gatorade not blue shade as it appears in your primary filter. Possible some additive giving off the smoke.

Thank you, I was wondering if that was what nailing sounds like. 3 new mounts on the air cleaner and new motor mounts. Bracket felt solid but I'll go in there again and recheck.

The engine shock mounts are good upper and lower, no clew on if the engine shocks themselves are any good

I've got 5 new monark nozzles here and popper, since a diesel purge didn't change anything I would guess that's the next step.

And yes, the blue color is from two stroke oil. I'm running the tank down to burn it out of there. I prefer powerkleen with cetene boost.

Oke. updates.

Loosening injector lines wasn't conclusive in finding the nailer, it seemed like the noise was 'less' when either one or two was loosened.

Flipped a coin an pulled injector #2. Put it on the popper and no chatter, it would get to about 1500 and squirt a stream, no mist. I have new monarks here so I tossed all the parts in the ultrasonic for an hour and then reassembled with a monark. Since I wasn't doing all 4 I didn't adjust pop pressure. Put it on the popper and it chattered like crazy and gave a nice spray.

Thought that would solve problem but no, still nailing. Attached are pics of the prechamber from the endoscope.

Air cleaner shock mounts are rechecked and good, bracket tight, and the aircleaner is solid, the heavy vibration has lessened with this one nozzle change but not gone. RPMs jumped almost 100 and I had to lower back down.

You can't run Bosch and Monark together, they are not compatible as a mixed set.
Both manufacturers have warned against doing this.

I don't doubt that. #2 was really fouled...it didn't chatter at all on pressure, it just pissed a solid stream. Changed that one and suddenly had chatter and a spray pattern.

Downside is it'll take me two days to finish, maybe longer. I run 'em 45 mins in the ultrasonic, and don't have a divider for the basket so it's one injector at a time after work. That's about enough time to get two done a night and do it right. I am WAY to clutzy to have two injectors apart at the same time anyway. Literally....I trip over dust bunnies.....

Answering myself...second sign of senility, forgot what the first sign was...

Pulled the other four injectors today and popped them. 2 were flat out bad, just pissed a straight stream, no chatter. Of the other 2, one dribbled and streamed before chattering and doing a lopsided pattern, the other was good. All 5 were running right at 110bar so I'd guess they are worn originals.

Pretty amazing engines. With only 2 properly working injectors, car was still starting quickly, doing highway speeds, and turning in decent mpgs....really looking forward to getting the pressure set and the new nozzles in.

Nope....at least not right away. 3 of 5 were just plain bad, 1 was iffy, but 5 new nozzles and all 5 within a hair of each other for popping and it still smokes and nailing noise. Shakes less...

Starts with just a tap now so atomizing fuel instead of streaming it seems to help there, The fuel is low so I'm going to fill it up with fresh stuff and give it a highway run tomorrow. Maybe it'll clear up.

If not it's just going to have to muddle on as is for a couple more weeks until the 240D is on the road, then I'll have time to park it in the barn and get into checking cam timing and whatever else might cause smoking and nailing.
