'75 240d Clutch Squeal

Hi, I'm sure this has been discussed before, but here it goes.

I have a 1975 240d (w115) w/ a 4 sp. When I push in the clutch peddle I get a loud squeal coming from the tranny. I'm suspecting the Throw out/ release bearing.

Being an organic vegetable farmer, I'm short on cash and have time to spend. Does it make sense to pull the tranny, checkout things and just grease that bearing, instead of doing a full clutch job? I've found a Luk brand kit for $180. I've installed a Luk in my Toyota and love it. Has anyone used one in a Benz?

If its squealing I would replace it. A good used one would be a better bet than trying to lube it and go. Someone would probably give you a good used one for shipping.

Our Corolla does the same thing on occasion -- I have been ignoring it for now, and nothing mean has come of it. There is a forum member who liked the LuK clutch -- I will try to find out who it was (he e-mailed me about it).

Thank You for the info.

Would it just be wise to buy the new throw-out bearing PeachParts has for sell?

Any one have an opinion on Transmission fluid in the 4sp? I think I read somewhere about "high quality ATF".

Left unfixed it will take out the pressure plate. release bearing ~$20.

Order the clutch lining. If a lot is left on the clutch, return it.

You also need to examine the pressure plate fingers which ride on the t/o bearing. If noticeably worn you should replace the pp too. They can break if too worn, resulting in a dragging clutch which will not fully disengage.
Any of these things require dropping the ds and tranny to replace, so that is what is risked. None will cause a catastrophic failure which would hurt you or likely leave you stranded.

Where do you do the organic farming? Is it anywhere in New England?

I'm in Tennessee. Sorry.

I think I found the thread discussing the Luk clutch and PM the user. I guess I'll go ahead and drop the tranny and check how much needs to be replaced.

Ah, good. Dan Stokes is the guy I have -- he warns that it does not come with the release bearing, so just buy that at the same time so that you don't get strangled over shipping for one little bearing.

I pulled the transmission today and found the outside of throwout bearing melted to some of the balls and the pressure plate/fork a little worn. Here's some pics, tell me what you think.

As for the flywheel and pilot bearing....

The fly wheel seems really smooth to me but the pilot bearing has no insides. The pics I find online show what looks like a sealed roller bearing. Advice?

those forks look fine, as do the friction pads on the disc. I'd just order a new throwout bearing, and drive happy.

The new Pilot bearing is a sealed bearing. what it looks like on your is a retainer cap that holds the bearing in from working out and to keep dirt out. This is only the second one I have seen, the majority of transmission I pulled from the Yards do not have this retainer.

If it is still available, probably a dealer item.

Looks like you got your moneys worth out of that Release bearing.

You will need to clean up the rusty shaft it rides on with some fine emery paper or some 500 or so grit wet and dry sand paper. then grease up the shaft the bearing slides on..

Let me get this straight...What I 'm looking at in the fly wheel is the cap and the bearing is behind there? I have a puller and the bearing is only $7 from peach parts. Should I replace the pilot bearing also? I assume I will destroy the cap in removal however.

IF your pilot bearing is the same as mine it's an SKF 6202-2RSJ. It's the same bearing that M-B puts in their box and charges you a fortune for. I got mine at our local bearing supplier for like $4.00. It's a common sealed bearing. Mine does not have the extra retainer but I've heard that some do. Charlie is pretty sharp on this stuff!
