Stubborn heat shields, how to remove?

So, here's the trouble: replacing injectors and find I can't get the heat shield out of cylinders 3-5. #1 and #2 just came out with a magnet, no trouble at all, but the rest seem fused to the head, how do you get them out?

Not an uncommon problem. There should be several methods to remove them in the DIY Repair Links.
Do the Heat Shields have the 5MM Hole or the 10mm Hole in them?
Carbon gets under them and on the sides and sort of holds them in.

Seems like a small hole, it's an 83 300TD if that helps?

I like to soak them in PB BLaster and chizel around the perimeter of them to remove any carbon that's got them stuck, then they come out pretty easy. others like to soak, then crank the motor over, and the air pressure blows them out. some drill an easy-out into the center hole, and pull them out with force... picks have been used, etc...

With the 5mm ones you can sometimes thread in a course threaded screw into the hole and pull up on it.
With the 10mm hole ones it is too close to the size of the Hole in the Prechamber; no meat in the ID to grab onto.

Never got a clear answer on the Hole sizes; some People said that earlier Models had the 10mm Hole and others like Me had the 5mm one on what appeared to be Injectors that had never been out and were original.

Most places sell only the 10mm Hole heat Shields; yet when I bought some for My Car 5 years ago the were selling the 5mm Hole ones.

You can still buy the 5mm hole ones by buying one for the 1980s VW Rabbit or Volvo Diesels

Pic Lag Bolts/Screws take on of the Heat Shields that you got out to size the Bolt; won't work with the 10mm holed ones.

I've heard of people using needle nose pliers. Stick the pliers down in the hole, open them up, wiggle a bit, and out they come

Try heat, then cold water to quench them (just a couple of drops) they break free instantly no need to actually work to remove them, just a bit of heat.
Otherwise a slide hammer should work fine with the screw or bolt attached to it going into the middle of the heat shield.

They really fly when you crank the engine over, be sure to put a rag or something to keep them from going somewhere they shouldn't...

The large opening ones are oem Mercedes, the smaller openings are what is installed on other diesels like VW, not original to Mercedes but probably all they could find. They both seem to work just fine so long as you use new ones, otherwise carbon gets in the threads of the injector body making removal tough.

funny....just ran into this today putting my newly renozzled injectors in. Close to 1730, was ready to be done, and zowie, #4 shield won't come out.

Tried needle noses, then my dental pics, finally tried what someone mentioned with a big screw, that worked. Turned it in just enough to bite, grabbed the hex head with vice grips and pulled it right out.

Heat shield just laughed 'was I holding you up...sorry man'.

If you look at the 86 190D, they use the one with the smaller hole, and $1.25 ea.

Then looking at the OM616, OM617, they use the one with the larger hole. and $1.75 ea.

The heat shield for the 190D didn`t post and then can`t edit it and repost the pic, so here goes.

Heat shield for the 86 190D has the smaller hole. and is $1.25 compared to the
OM616, OM617 Shield.

I like the idea one of our Member suggested. If you have Injectors with New Nozzles use the Heat Shields with the small 5mm Hole.
Later after you have a lot of miles on the Engine if the Injectors need to be pulled use the Heat shields with the Larger Holes so there will be a nice new flat surface for them to seat on that was formally covered up by the 5mm holed Heat Shield.

Thanks! Got em out.

I read the links provided by 911, but didn't find anything associated with injector heat shields, but know what to do now with the engine mount heat shields when that comes time.

I used WD40 Penetrating oil (a new formula they are marketing to counter PB and the ilk). Just a could drops, around the edges, then a screwdriver in the middle, and a little wiggle and out they came.

I noticed the ones I bought from pelican parts aren't brass colored but black, anyone know why they've changed?
