1987 300D Transmission Issues

Ok, I have posted the question on various forums and I'm wondering if I'm explaining the symptoms correctly. After driving it for 6000 miles or so, I think I have a handle on what it's doing, I just don't know the cause.

First, transmission fluid and filter were changed about 700 miles ago and no change in symptoms. The fluid that I took out did not look burned but I can't tell you how long it's been in there. It was my grandfathers car since new, and I just recently started driving it. The fluid has been checked after 70 mile+ drives and is at the correct level.

It sat for roughly 2 years in a garage.

Now the symptoms. While driving and letting off the throttle. The transmission will slip out of gear at under 35 to 40mph. So when you give it part throttle, it now goes into 1st before shifting in to second which would be the gear it would have most likely been in at that speed. This causes the RPM to rise as if down shifting. I can make a video of it if that helps but I figured I'd start here first.

The transmission works fine when cold and I've never had any problem up shifting thru the gears. It's also fine over 40mph.

I'm afraid to just start throwing parts at it with out some understanding on what might be causing it. I bought a bottle of Trans-x but have elected to hold off on using it. The symptoms do not sound like a B-2 piston or shift down switch. I have unplugged the vacuum source so I don't feel it's that.

Any transmission guru's care to chime in?

Oh, this might be important. The car only has 106k on it.

My car was/is doing the exact same thing.

Feels like it slips into Neutral around 35-40 MPH, then you give it gas, and it shifts back to where it should be..

I had my shop change the fluid and filter and that helped a bit. Maybe it was low... Its seems to do it less but it still does it from time to time depending on just how fast the deceleration is..

With your foot completely off the throttle right? If I give it a little throttle, it's fine. I feel there is a loss of pressure somewhere at idle.

Yep sounds about right. It usually happens when I take an exit ramp off the freeway. I'll hit the ramp at high speed then slow down to 20 or so, foot off the pedal...then i'll squeeze the accelerator and it'll do the 'oops-i-fell-out-of-gear-must-shift-though' thing.

Like I said its much better now and somewhat less prone to do that since I've had the fluid and filter change. I think that maybe I was low? Maybe.

Sticking the thing in 3rd gear just prior also eliminates the problem. Other than that the transmission works as it should.

It should be noted that some 20-25K miles ago (October-2012) I replaced the governor's gear and the gear that drives (on the output shaft).

I was thinking governor, but as I said, I didn't' want to throw money at it if I wasn't sure. Did your issue start when you changed it or did you change it to try to resolve the issue?

To be honest, I can't remember. I bought the car, drove it home from Columbus..drove it once around the block a week later (couldn't get to BMV until the following weekend)...then drove it again a few days later and BAM governor broke.

So I really didnt have much time with it before governor replacement.

I think the best thing do to would be to get a set of gauges and watch the governor pressures while driving but I dont have the gauges. Anything short of that is just throwing parts at it.

I don't think its a governor issue but I could be wrong. Have you looked at the ATSG's PDF on the 722.3/4? Google it, theres a PDF out there.

What car are you having the issue with? I tried trans x and there is no change.

This was on my 91 300D (722.418) my problem seems to have moved down to only occurring around 20-25 mph. As such its much less of a problem, more of an annoyance. I sent off my transmission fluid for analysis. I'll post up results and well see how it goes
