What about Potomac German?

Have you checked with your insurance company or agent?

If you're paying for it yourself, might a replacement car make more financial sence?

Did the shop figure out what happened or only that it's not repairable?

And I have been following this thread as a fellow OM606.962 owner with 200k miles...please keep us posted on the cause when you find it.

Sorry to hear about the failure, that has to be heartbreaking. I know it's a matter of time when my number is up. Just trying to learn what to look out for.

I hope the failure turns out to be economically worthwhile to repair and you're able to save your car.

Right now I've opted to put the car into storage... the reasons I was given were excessive wear causing excessive blowby causing runaway conditions. without tearing into this motor I wont know. and I wont know for a few months or longer. I just do not have the cash to get another engine. the best option is a rebuilt unit which would give a warranty. or going with an unknown used engine. all of which right now are financially out of my reach...

Man I'm sorry to hear that happened.

If you change your mind and decide to part it out let me know, I might be needing some odds and ends depending on your interior color scheme.

My semi-scientific wild guess is that any engine with enough blow by to cause a runaway won't have enough compression to continue running. When you do get enough money/time to autopsy the engine, I'm quite curious about what you find.

I'm curious too.

Normally the drive by wire system and the transmission controller talk to each other and won't let the transmission downshift into something that would be dangerous.

Unless there was a failure in the transmission control system I cannot see how the car downshifted on its own. But you said there were no codes on the powertrain side.

I'm still hoping I come across a screamin deal on an engine.... they are out there. just not right now. the engines out there after thinking and looking are all too high in price and miles for the price they ask. there's a rebuilt for about 8K but I cannot even come to afford that right now. but it's nice to think about... right now my attention is focused on getting my TD running again, and also getting Leaky lou fixed (borrowed 99 F-350) anyone have a 603.962 injection pump they dont want anymore?

You'll have a hard time finding a good, complete motor for much under $2k delivered. Same with looking for a wrecked car. Don't get too excited by Copart listings, remember those are auctions, and the price spikes up near the end.

yeah.. but with a set limit if it sells for more, then it's not for me. The problem is finding a broker/dealer who dosnt want a ton of money up front.

well, the bids went over what I wanted to pay... So I'm going to move the car to long term storage... I hate the idea, but I dont have the cash to re-engine this car. I was offered scrap value on it...was tempted but I still want to try and fix this car. Thank you for the help. I'll update this thread with pictures if and when I find an acceptable engine

What exactly is broken in the engine? Did you pull the valve cover? You might 'only' need a cylinder head or front cover.
