Very sobering. Have a friend whose 606 died at the same mileage (in his case, it was IP). Makes me wonder whether my 95 with 306k is a ticking time bomb! But Chris W, with 405k and counting, gives me reason for hope!

I've owned this car for just over a year. the person who owned it was a diesel mechanic, he did the glow plugs (actually got the old ones) and had been problem free. MBZ maintained for about 2 years after the warranty went. Newer trans installed after the other one went plotz. I've put 8K miles on it after I had some small minor things done with it.. Plastic parts break etc with age. I do believe the 606 is a good engine, I dont know what let go yet, the repair shop I called (they know me...) and they said they'll have it into the shop around lunch time... when I get the engine back (I hope I dont have to replace the engine) I'll tear it down and see what went Kerflooey. Post a lot of pictures, and go through a rebuild process if I need to. I'll see it again this afternoon. I have to go down there and pick up me mums wheel chair etc from the car.

pull the vacuum pump... see if it's grenaded into itself...

and +1 on the TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES!!!
I'll pull it and see, I Dont think these pumps are prone to killing the engine on the 606 are they? I had the one replaced on my 603 because I had the old style

Yes...

ALL VACUUM PUMPS THAT ARE DRIVEN BY THE TIMING CHAIN CAN FAIL AND DESTROY THE ENGINE!!!

some are less prone to minor wear grenading, but ALL vacuum pumps can destroy the motor with excess wear.
PERIOD!!!

The '98-up 606 has a different design vacuum pump and is much less prone to spilling its guts into the timing case. I'm not saying that it is impossible, just that it's less likely. OTOH, the timing chain (do we know its age/miles?) could fail for some reason unrelated to the vacuum pump and that would cause all sorts of problems.

This leads me to believe it is not the timing chain.

Time will tell. I'll be going down there in about 45 minutes.. I hope it's just a few injectors... I really do

Tragically it is not just a few injectors in my opinion. Nor anything all that simple. Minumin damage would be some bent valves I expect. Will not idle is not that great a scenario after what transpired. Lucky it would still start though. Although I would have investigated before trying to restart.

Another engine at that milage is not the end of the world and can be cheaper overall than extensive repairs.

I of course hope I am wrong. I would like to be wrong in a case like this. Fortunately in some cases in life I am.

might have lucked out. they got the car to run.... I'm not sure what they did. but I told them the cicumstances on how to force the issue once again and as I left it was merrily fogging the general area for mosquitos again so I assume they got it to do whatever it did before.... I dont know. I will report back again

as a side note, the alternator in my borrowed ride took a crap on me... when it rains it pours..

No luck. Engine is DOA. No compression on 4/6 CYL. Dont know the exact cause. will do an autopsy on the block when I get a replacement unit.

I am going to guess it is timing chain or timing chain tensioner related.

If it was the timing chain, I don't think they would be able to restart the vehicle...
