If the chain broke I agree, if tensioner failed maybe? Just guessing.

Real curious to see what the failure was. I have a customer with a 99 e300 with original chain. I hate to see him run it to failure.

Maybe broken cam but even that does not make a lot of sense. Running it over and over again after the original event will not help matters either.

Maybe not the end of the world for that engine but someone has to have a look under that valve cover.

Downshift, overrev, smoke suggests to me that a tranny problem was the trigger and the engine was an unfortunate victim. Check the 722.6 for codes before you buy a replacement engine. There might be a longer shopping list in fact, check the CAN for codes as well if the shop has SDS equipment. It should help determined the sequence of events.

Trans codes are clear, no issues on the trans side.

Do a search on lkq. They are a very reputable breaker with facilities all over. I did a quick search yesterday around my zip code and did not see anything. I got the engine for the wifes 05 e320 from them and was very happy with it.

See below for a few. It is ALWAYS best to get the VIN of the donor vehicle, and then pay for an AutoCheck or CarFax, to verify the claimed mileage is accurate - especially on lower-miles engines. You can use the EPC to confirm that the engine number you receive is actually from the VIN claimed. This also will verify they are selling the correct 606.962 engine. You'll need to ask questions to make sure you are getting a complete engine with turbocharger and injection pump. Some places sell those separately. Freight costs may vary drastically depending on your location.

I've had good results buying stuff from European Automotive Group. I've bought from Carguts too but they were a notch below EAG, IMO. I've never purchased from the other places below. Couldn't find any of these motors at LKQ.
