606 go Kaboom.

606 went Kerboom.... Cruising the freeway going 75, going down hill car downshifted, RPM's spiked metal sound and a huge cloud of smoke.... Engine rolls over, very hard to start and will not idle. my 606 I believe is dead... 297,818 miles.... sh...t

Hopefully it's a blown torque converter dragging the engine. What funky adapters do you need for a 606 compression test?

I can tell you it's not.... I think the chain went kerflooy and I might have ingested some valves.... it was a VERY ugly sound..... that part of the freeway should be clear of mosquitos for awhile....

I think you are correct... Maybe I am wrong.... but it was an ugly ugly sound top end of the engine....

W124 or W210 ?
N/A or Turbo ?

If you perform an autopsy, please post your findings and photos.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Yes, count me in as well.

Sorry to hear. Was it the original timing chain?

Sorry to hear that. Mine is reaching the 240,000 mile mark and the engine runs like a top still. No change in oil consumption for 200,000 miles. Have it in Colorado now and I routinely get over 35 mpg. Will be very sad when mine goes up in smoke.

Would love to hear what it might have been, and hopefully it is something one can inspect and address before it goes boom. Did you say "it" downshifted on its own at 75 mph? What rpm did you see?

My deepest sympathies. I have had nothing but a great experience with this engine (mine is a turbo), and the car as a whole has been rock solid.

Jim

I'll post pictures. If the engine is shot I'll yank the head and rebuild the entire thing. It'll be a pain in the butt.. I wanna see what happened. the very minimal blew something top end, the worst.. bent a rod... it was a very very unhappy sound.... I want to know why my car did this....

It was a W210 Turbo its in my 99 E300D. I love that car..

Me included. I was sad to see my '98 get sold, but the guy (my neighbor friend) made me an offer I could not refuse. He still drives it every day. I am sure it has close to 300,000 miles on it now, it is a great car.

Tear it down, and see what's there - as to what's broken. Most interested in what blew?

Friends here in Dallas buy used MB diesels all the time, and going kablooey seems to be the norm, when something's very, very used, cheap, and of questionable repair and maintenance. Sometimes you win big with a very low priced used car with incredibly high-miles and worn, and sometimes not..... Two MB cars of record I could mention right now.....
