Just won the dumb ass award

After changing manifold gaskets, installing oil cooler lines, flushing rad, new vac pump, turbo drain, cleaning etc, I had oil thrown around in line with the compressor pulley.

Further inspection shows PS pulley rubbed hole in top oil line. Broken seat springs don't matter now. Can't drive.

Don't feel so dumb.....your not the only one.....I have rub marks on both my oil cooler lines and just yesterday I noticed one on my lower radiator hose......as they say you learn from your mistakes, now I know where they rub and how far to keep them away....and I always inspect them now, when I check fluids....

I remember loosening engine mounts, pulling engine shocks, jacking engine & removing lower oil cooler line before doing the upper line.

Question: Can any of the above steps be left out?

I didn't pull engine shocks when I did mine. I still got enough clearance to get the lines in and out.

I come is second, I've changed motormounts on two gasser mercedes and my 300sd. Last weekend I couldn't get the driverside mount in no mater how much I jacked the engine up on my 240d (new to me).I decided to change out the oil pan gasket and think about the motormounts. I came across a engine mount shot to shoot from a oil leak. Took it off jacked up the engine and changed out the mount. I only wonder why a 240d needs the engine mount?

No, your a long way from that award. I think I won it when I tried to fix what I thought was a timing issue on one of my 85 300D's... and well ended up with only half an engine...

I was working on the sunroof in my w116 SD. I had removed the cable. I was driving around town with it that way, just pulling it open and closed. I did have it wired down, after a fashion.

Or so I thought.

Got up on the freeway doing 70 or so (can you see this one coming?) and suddenly hear whistling from the leading edge of the roof. Look up, it's starting to lift. I quickly reach up to grab the frame, miss, and give it a nudge instead.

It lifts off into the slipstream like an ejector seat, bounces off the pavement twice and narrowly misses going straight through the windshield of the car behind me.

So no, relax, nothing you did just about injured others. I still get a bad feeling in my stomach when I think about it.

OUCH... you put in new oil cooler line, but left it in the path of the PS belt... are your motor mounts intact?

I hardly think this grants you the DAA, but it certainly hurts the wallet!!!

DAA level stuff is driving with the hood latch not installed, and using a lamp cord or bungee cord to hold the hood down... when driving on the interstate.

or other intentionally reckless behavior on the car.

you DO get the Face Palm Doh! award though...

Motor mounts are new. Engine shock mounts are made with flexane. The bad news is I remember the top hose goes in first which means I have to pull the lower also.

I'm not sure where I got that info but someone confirm if it is easier to leave the lower hose and remove only the upper. I expect that I'll find out regardless.

if it's easier to remove the a/c mount, and compressor, no need to lift the motor, or remove the motor mounts with it out....

The good thing is that No One gets to keep the Dumbass Award very long as the competition is extremely intensive and Everyone gets to win it at one time or another.

Considering other possibilities, I'm thinking that I didn't WIN it but certainly nominated myself. The top line is the expensive one.

I haven't found a good brand other than OE at twice the price.

I, too, am a proud past holder of the DAA. several times.

Can we get a shoulder patch?

My $3K 85SD was having difficulty shutting off, and difficult with HARD brake pedal, and I kept putting off searching for the issue... figured it was a leak, and would get to it when I got less busy...

I now need an engine since the vacuum pump let go and grenaded the head...

Just be careful out there in always double-checking your safety measures on any job; with back-up jackstands, eye=protection, fire extinguisher handy, etc.

We've all scr#w#d-up big time being in-a-hurry and overfilled/underfilling, didn't fill, etc.... I've got zeroes on the back of my mess-ups - but I won't sacrifice safety, if I can remember it!
