1987 300TD Wagon - Oil Leak from Turbo
I knew that I had an oil leak a pretty bad one. I changed the oil in my car and I drove it about 30 miles over 3 weeks. The low oil light came on and I put the car up on ramps but did not see oil leaking from anywhere.
I had to move the car yesterday about 20 feet and I put it back on the ramps. When I looked behind the car I saw oil pouring out of the tailpipe. It has the garrett turbo. I am pretty sure it is the turbo and that it needs to be rebuilt. Is this something most people do themselves or should I send it out? I actually have a spare one, but I do not know the condition of it. |

I have a Garrett in the car and a back up one from another OM603 engine that I have.
The two friends of mine that are mechanics both said that they do not rebuild Turbos - mainly because they have to warranty their work. They both said that they send them out so that they can make sure it is guaranteed. I am tempted to try and use this kit: https://**************.com/store/om-603-1986-1987-garrett-t3-turbocharger-basic-overhaul-kit But, I just want to know if other people have successfully rebuilt these and stopped oil leaks. |

I did one on a Saab turbo, won't do again. Balance is everything and failure can result in metal bits being forced in via the intake.
My 'rebuild' didn't fail.....I was always just so damn nervous about it that after less than 10k miles I replaced it with a nice one I found in the boneyard (nice as in no end play).

This is my impeller on the exhaust side after bits from the trap oxidizer locked it up. It ain't purdy but it works. I wouldn't stress too much over it. Get the kit with seals, shaft and impeller. Make sure you mark the cases before you pull it apart or you'll be hating life putting it back together.

The TO was replaced with strait pipe but the crappy MB dealer never checked the turbo. The turbo was locked up for years while my Grandfather owned it. I decided i would rip it apart and see what was up. I pulled the pieces off and cleaned it and it spun well and figured I had nothing to lose by trying it as is. It runs great.

you'd have nothing to lose taking it to an MB dealer, and attempting to get them to replace the turbo with the TO chunks in your hand!
