The only thing I can think if, is the tank must have a pin hole in it some where from the gunk/rust...

And you know what I just found. A stupid pinhole leak. Two to be exact.

This is frigin ridiculous.

Can this even be repaired? I knew I should have just swapped the strainer and not cleaned it out. I knew it.

I've honestly never had such a crappy luck either a Mercedes Diesel before this car.

FYI: a new tank from Mercedes is around $1000.

Steel tank? Fixable. I had that done on my '73 Chrysler back in the day. Drain and drop tank, fill with water (this step is kind of important), weld, drain and dry out, then reinstall.

Contact local antique car club, restoration shop, look for gas tank repair shops.
I know they are there, and fairly cheap.

A good used tank should be fairly easy to locate, but shipping could be difficult, unless it has been cleaned.

Do us ALL a favor and put some of the settled diesel you drained out of your old tank in the replacement one....shoush it around for a bit and then pour it out to see what might be in the replacement tank.

Let me know if you need/want either of the 2 spare tanks I now have. Last year when I was looking......I bought one in IN and drove up to get it.
