Cutting springs due to corrosion/crack?

One of the front springs on my w123 240D are cracked at the bottom.

The pick n pulls wants $100 for one

Could I simply clean it up, cut the same amount off the other spring?

My concern is that cutting it means the spring won't sit flat against the mounting surface. Could I just flip it upside down so that the cut end goes up into the rubber seat?

A few Members have cut their Springs to lower their Car but they do not just cut one spring.
What are you going to do to level out the other side?

Why don't you Post over on the For Sale section and put wanted in the Title and see if someone has a Spring to offer.

Cutting springs due to corrosion/crack?

I was going to cut both front springs and accept that the car will be "raked" a bit.

I would do a LF thread but I'm afraid nobody will send to Canada. I guess it's worth a shot I guess..

I'd most certainly do a WTB thread - I wouldn't be surprised if you find someone in Canada who has a set for sale / you can have.

I must say that I'm surprised you can't buy them here on Pelican - I did check for you - they are available to buy here - the shipping costs will exceed the price mentioned in your first post though...

...you might want to contact vstech - he might be able to help with parts - though I of course can not speak for him...

Try a different auto wrecker or maybe that is just the going price today. A hundred for a used coil spring they will not sell otherwise seems high to me. You might offer them substantially less as well.

The upper part of the spring is likely closed and ground so no help in flipping over.

The lower seat should be contoured to accept a open coil. As you have seen, the break took place where the coil changed from a dead ( no twisting ) to live ( twisting ).

Since the spring operates on somewhat of a curve, the lower seat helps it from escaping.

If you are going to make the cut, use an abrasive cut off wheel and protect the spring from sparks / errant grinding wheel nicking the good part of the spring.

Heating the last 1/2 coil then bending the last 1/4 in to a flattened shape would be helpful.

Yes there is a lot of price gouging based on too many people in Canada just paying the asking price. Part of our culture I suppose.

You have to learn fast how to negotiate where you can. If they will not negotiate just leave. Usually word of mouth though can find reasonable priced suppliers of many things.

After awhile you just seem to learn where to go for what you want.

Google the part number, you will find vendors that have new for <$100. At this point, the rear springs have likely sagged as well. Will sit funny till you replace rears as well.

I would just replace all four springs. You're look at about $100 for the fronts and $100-120 for the rears.

Question I have is how thick or how many burls are on your current spring pad?

If you have a 8 mm or 1 burl pad or maybe a 13mm or 2 burl pad, you can just cleanly cut off the end of the spring and use a 23 mm or 4 burls pad or a 18 mm or 3 burls pad to raise it up to a stock height. You would match the coil removal on other side also while making sure both springs are not heavily corroded.

Tomorrow, I'll be meeting up with someone I found on a local classifieds site to dig through his storage to find a used spring. If he wants any more than $40 for it, I might have to take an hour trip across the border along with some other parts to make it worthwhile. The problem is that it'll be a while before I can comfortably afford such a parts order.

And yes, there's 2 aspects that make this tough - being in Canada, and being in a relatively small town (Ottawa) Everyone prices their stuff like we have no other choice, and make us feel like crooks or idiots when we ask for a lower price.

Seems like nobody has any parts for anything other than 90s-early2000s econoboxes or pickup trucks on hand.

Hell I can't even find parts for my Jeep Wrangler without having to have things special ordered with a deposit, shipping fee, and 2 week wait time.

Also, I am Japanese and I struggle with Asian stereotypes; I do my best to avoid satisfying them. My greatest fear is negotiating and being told something along then lines of "you people are so f*** ing cheap..." So if I don't like the price, I'll just walk away rather than have a pride crushing experience.
