How sick is it to think......The E250 Sedan is basically the direct descendant of.....The 240D!!!! Except I'm sure it's loaded down with unnecessary features and accommodations.

Do manufactures usually build cars with features that people do not want? Seems like an odd business plan.

I guess our 300Ds are really e-classes. The e250 is more than I can afford, but allowing for inflation, it is cheaper than the 85 300D would have been. By comparison, the GLK250, is a bargain.

BTW, my brother who lives in another part of world, has an E250. He has owned many different benzes, but still raves about the E250.
What are the list prices, and how do you figure that?

People probably said the same thing in the 80s about the W123 240D when compared to the W120/121 diesels of the 50s and 60s.

Ha ha ha! I meant that sorta tongue-in-cheek. We are in the 21st century after all. I would prefer less features simply for the idea of saving weight, and improving all around performance. Not because it would break or something. But then again I'm too cheap and poor to be able to afford a new Mercedes, anyway.

45mpg in your dreams.
I get 37 highway ALL THE TIME with my 05 E320CDI and it's 3.2L displacement. I quite confident 45MPG will be easily made by the OM651 engine in this platform.

No. Both the W210 and W211 along with the W212 are under the car--fold down rear seats!

all pics BEFORE the E250 are there, as are all photos AFTER the car's shots...
any chance MB has blocked them from my G+ account?

Did y'all realize that the engine in the E250 is also available in the Sprinter?

Considering the loss of value of the dollar compared to 1983, a 300D today would sell for $75-80K- and it's not loaded down with all the useless junk found in the current crop of new vehicles.

That makes no sense in reality, when you can buy a new 2014 E250 for $50K +/- in 2013.

I'll take a new 2014 45 mpg - E250 all day - with all of it's useless junk.......vs. Grandpa's poor fuel-mileage, non-ABS, non-airbags W123.

E250 starts at US52,325 so say $56,000 incl delivery etc.

Price of a 1985 300D was about US$32k back in 85. Using an inflation calculator, $32k in 85 is equivalent to about $67k at end of 2012.

Numbers may be slightly out, but in the right ballpark.
