I drilled down and screwed in a steel threaded rod before welding, but I made the thing weaker than stock.

It has not been a problem, but then again its been behind a 616 all the time it was used, so thats not saying much.

What I should have done is leave the input shaft alone, use a W201 clutch (which incidentally gives you a lot of different options for performance vs the W123), and if it was an issue, machined a spacer to hold the pilot bearing out a little further. This would have not compromised any strength.

I like your project as far as cutting the Bell Housings and swapping the 4 onto the 5 speed.

I have looked and read your thread many times, and the more I think about it, why not make a bronze Bushing to replace the MB Pilot Bearing, but make it a bit longer to make up the difference for the shorter snout on the 5-spd trans shaft. then the 23 spline 190E/D Clutch Disk could be used.

The other thread where the guy cuts slices into the 5-spd trans, leaves it open for dirt/water etc...to enter the bell Housing. that would need to be addressed, and a cover for the Starter Snout.
The Adaptor plate will move the end of the Input Shaft farter back from the Pilot bearing. here again maybe a longer Bronze Bushing could be made to make up for that distance.
