looking at 1995 E300

Hello all - I just test drove a very clean 1995 E300 Diesel with 157,000 miles on it. Very nice car in great shape. The guy probably wants about $2,500 for it which sounds good considering it has new tires - pirelli's, brakes, rotors etc... I have a '99 E300 turbo and have had a 1994 E320 wagon that I put 308,000 on 'till the transmission blew.

My question is why the '95 E300 doesn't have a red line on the tach - can you punch that engine all the way to 7000 RPM? My '99 Turbo red lines at 5000 RPM.

Only issue with car is that it doesn't like to downshift on highway when punching gas - I had to drop it manually to 3rd to get it going. I've been told by the owner that it needs a trans fluid change.

I highly doubt it can go to 7k.

The 95 E300D has the same OM606 engine as your (and my) W210.

Edit: Except the 95 (and the 96-97 W210s) were naturally aspirated and the 98-99 W210s have a turbo. But it's practically the same block and head so I would think the redline would be similar. It is 5k on my 98.

My wife's ML320 CDI (OM642) has a 4k redline. But that thing can pull like nobody's business.

Same engine except no turbo.

MB didn't put a red arc in Diesel tachs through at least '95.

No downshift could be a Bowden cable adjustment. How about if you press the pedal until you feel the click of the kickdown switch?

Hello
On mine 94's e300d, no red zone on the tach, which goes until 6000 rpm.

The very clean for the price ($2.5K) and the miles (157K) ratio sounds good.

$2500,00 for a 95 E300? That's a killer deal. I'd do it in a heartbeat. Very low mileage. I've owned a 606 Diesel (turbo). Excellent fuel economy with 606's. IIRC I had 33MPG with that car.

Thanks to all. I actually have the opportunity to drive it all weekend too! I think I'll take the seller up on that offer. It needs a refrigerant charge and still has not been converted yet to updated r134a (?). I hope the evaporator is still good 'cause that is a very expensive job on w124 if I remember correctly. I'll get to investigate the kickdown switch too.

?? By the '95 model year R134a was the standard refrigerant on US spec Mercedes passenger cars.

I missed that part, thanks sixto for bringing it up!

yeah... all MB's 93 and up were designed from the start with 134 in them... no conversion needed.

if it's flat... unless there is a bad hose... you will likely need an evaporator.

Well then, be interested in getting your description / assessment of it when you see it, and get some pictures of it, AND some driving impressions of it, along with the records on/of the car - if any.

What part of the country are you in - if you didn't mention this already?

I'm in south east Connecticut. Is it possible or probable that the evaporator will need replacing if the refrigerant is gone?
