Back to your original question. 5000 RPM is basically the max rpm and max throttle shift point - AFAIK there is no mechanical or electronic rev limiter and no "set" redline. No way to get 7000 RPM out of this car. 5K is already quite a high RPM for a diesel like this. Change the primary and secondary fuel filter, and your (future) car will most likely downshift just fine. Also check the kickdown switch, and you can search for EGR disable on the board which makes it more eager to downshift.

I was able to drive the car all weekend. This is a really nice tight car and a steal for $2500! I am going to buy it.
The transmission shifting problem isn't that bad but i'll get the fluids changed and see what happens. Thanks to all!

I just bought one with twice the miles and so far am very pleased with it. Smoother than the 603, no turbo so longevity is potentially increased. w124 facelift. I'm walking on eggshells because of the miles but I've put nearly 2k on it in a week

The one I just bought from Articathlon in Houston is a gem. After getting the Goodyears off and Michelins on, this car drives like a dream. Sure, the new suspension on my '85 wagon can handle a lot more of the bump in the road, but this car is smooth as glass.
Was driving with the wife (date night) last night and she mentioned how slow everyone was going on the tollway. I said, no, I'm just doing 90... She thought I was lying.

So I bring in newly acquired '95 Diesel to MB shop for inpsection and transmisison fluid change and R134a charge and here's the fallout: They said it is super clean and in really good shape but it needs: fuel lines due to leaks - drag link - tie rod - front and rear flex disc. Also they told me the motor and transmission on the wiper are going bad. How does that happen? Never - ever- had wiper motor go bad. Still a good dedal for $2000 and 155,000 miles

The problems are relatively minor, you're lucky. If the wwiper works, don't worry about it. Junkyard replacements are available but note that you must use 1994-95 "facelift" parts.
Is the monovalve cracked?

Agree with Jeremy. Those problems are minor. Get all new plastic fuel lines and if you are handy it is not a bad DIY except you will probably want to take the crossover pipe and intake manifold off. The flex disks are also DIYable but much easier with a lift. Same for steering components.
Do not get a new wiper and trans. Find one from a boneyard. I paid about $100 for mine. Because of the eccentric motion there is a lot of wear and tear on these wiper trannys, so they do wear out. Just make sure they will take it back if it is worn out. This is easily DIYable also. You may be able to get a couple more years out of yours by lubing it, on the replacement unit I got it was the type which is not easy to open and lube, so I carefully drilled a hole in mine and shot it full of lithium grease from an aerosol can and plugged the hole with silicone. Been running much better for a couple years now. Was starting to slow down before I lubed it. Nice deal you got. You suck! (I mean that in a good way) Rgds, Chris W. '95 E300D, 407K
