Power steering filter on 98 E300D?

The EPC seems to indicate that my 98 E300D has a power steering filter, the same kind I'm used to on my 124s. But, the reservoir is of a different configuration. Do I have a filter? If so, how do I access it?

Thanks.

I don't believe there's a filter in the W210 cars. Those days are long passed...

No filter; EPC is misleading. No change procedure in the maintenance docs either, only "check and top up." At 249,000 miles, my "new" '96 E300 had its original fluid, black with age and the pump beginning to fail. I flushed the system several times and saved the pump although it still is occasionally weak.

Yep, I bought a filter for my '99 E300D when I first got it figuring that I'd replace the power steering fluid and filter. Turns out there isn't one. Fortunately that same filter works in my 240D.

The last Diesel if IIRC to have a filter is the 87 300D. The 90's they didn't have them. That's a big mistake on EPCnet.

No, the 90's 124's all had them. My 91, 92, and 95 all use the exact same filter.

It's been awhile since I've been under the hood of anything 87 and newer that uses a filter. Like 10 years so excuse the brain fog today.

the filter is not a separate part but is built into the plastic reservoir atop the pump, to replace the filter you need to replace the plastic reservoir itself.

be careful in the process - you need to let the internal filter soak up for about 10 minutes before you start the engine, otherwise a filter blowout can occur. My 2000 MY E320 has got clean PSF in it and absolutely no noise. MB dont specify a change interval but in the service records, the rack, pump and reservoir were replaced at 100,000 miles.

The fluid looks to be perfectly clear....hard to imagine that it's original at 73k miles but who knows?

As Z said, filter is integral part of reservoir (just like BMW's). When the filter plugs badly you will hear a noise that sounds just like it is low on power steering fluid but it will be at the correct level.
