1987 w124 300d engine noise

I have noticed a sound coming from the engine in my 1987 300d. There is a like a pumping sound sounds like a heartbeat through a stethoscope but fast or some kind of pumping sound. The diesel smell smells stronger lately or maybe this is all in my head!??

It seems noisier but I have been driving my e430 lately so that may definitely be in my head.

Any thoughts?
