Cat Recommendations, Anyone?

Not sure yet, but I may need a new cat on my 98 E300D. There's a joint that's been patched and my exhaust guy will need to take a look before I know exactly what I need to do.

Talked to Magnaflow....apparently they are no longer manufacturing EPA compliant diesel cats....but may do so in the future. However, I suspect there's still existing supply of the right one for my car. But the Magnaflow web site is no help because you can't find diesel MBs in the search.

So anyone know a good cat for my car? Just want to make sure I know my options BEFORE I go to the exhaust shop.

Thanks.

Crumb! Does it really look like this?

Try www.summitracing.com and shop Diesel cats by inlet/outlet diameter.

FWIW, Amazon shows a Bosal 289-119 catback replacement for $220.

My PO replaced the cat while he had the car.

He used Genuine MB 210-490-72-20-88, back in Feb of 2011 it was $436 with a $110 core charge.

Also need a 210-490-05-41 clamp ($21) and 210-492-05-81 seal ring ($39).

Everybody's a comedian!

Try Catco. The Bosal system is cat back, meaning they are starting at the outlet of the cat - not what you're after.

M-B does NOT manufacture their own cats so you'll need to find their source so you can buy it before they put it in a tri-star box and triple the price. I'll send off a note to my sister-in-law as her knowledge is current and mine's WAY dated. She's likely to know the maker that Benz uses.

Your exhaust shop probably has access to a generic aftermarket cat and they'll save you a pile of money.

A number of ways to skin this cat. (sorry, I HAD to do it)

Ha yes I was going to suggest going to the shelter, they've always got plenty to spare.

I've seen this thread at least four times today and had a moment of confusion... "Cat? ...ohhh ."

I used a generic diesel cat made by magnaflow on my 95 E300D - but the turbo one uses a different shape which makes it hard to source.

So you will be searching for the OE suppler, buying stock and offering the systems at 2x the price rather than the MB 3X?

Think of the 100% profit you will be making and the 33% discount you will be offering MB drivers.

Mainly what I'm trying to do is figure out best deal on the right cat so I can negotiate the best price with the exhaust shop....I have no plans actually to buy a cat.

You ought to know if you need a new cat. There are various codes that will be thrown due to the restriction in addition to a definite rattle at certain lower RPM's. Is not that hard to tell.

PO243 comes to mind. I lived with it for 30-40k miles; my Indie Mech solved that issue for me. See sig.

The 603.96 crowd guts their cat with a poker. I'd look like I went a full 15 with Freddy Kreuger if I tried that on scottmcphee's cat

The image link that doesn't show is of a downpipe with the cat on the near vertical section with inlet and outlet positioned near horizontally. It seems like a lot of custom work, at least fitting elbows, to install a generic cat that aligns properly with the rest of the system.
