207d Broken Windshield

The windshield on my 207d shattered while driving on the freeway yesterday. I'm stranded in Palm Springs, CA and facing the prospect of getting rid of the van, since sourcing a replacement windshield would probably take much longer than the time I have before I need to be home in Santa Rosa.

If anyone in Southern California would be interested in taking this vehicle off my hands, please get in touch. Otherwise, my only option may be to donate it, which would probably result in it being scrapped.

I would also welcome any ideas about replacing the windshield or getting the van home without spending a fortune.

This vehicle needs some work (in addition to the new windshield), but the engine has under 100,000km. I'm happy to provide details and photos is anyone is interested.

I am sure there will be no shortage of people who would want to buy that vehicle!

over 500 miles with no windshield would be horrible, but id make the drive vs selling such a rare and interesting vehicle randomly on the road like this.

Were it me, id buy a cheap full face motorcycle helmet. No windshield is also no obstruction to view, however unpleasant. If you have a full helmet, what can a cop possibly say? a helmet is perfectly legal for motorcycles, so should be fine for a windshieldless van.

Id make the drive personally

I found that thread and spoke with Tom. They can order a windshield from Germany and have it here in a few weeks. If I can find a place to store the van in Palm Springs in the interim, I may go that route.

Call the dealer. They had a windshield in stock for my 190SL and it was only $400. Maybe get on the EPC to find the part number and then call the dealer so you don't have to talk them into getting into the euro catalog.

Or since you're in California call the classic center. I've dealt with them a couple times and they can be really helpful.

Have you tried a Westfalia service center or support group?

I wonder if there are more W100s than MB vans in the US? 1972 Mercedes 600 SWB windshield good condition

This is the red neck approach but I would get a piece of lexan at a local shop and duct tape that bad boy into place!

X2 on the Lexan to get you home. Dealers will have no clue. Only place in the US that has the parts listsings for the van was Europa in Santa Fe. Doubt they have it anymore. Maybe the Unimog dealer in the NW will have the listings. He sells the bigger vans (508d)

As a last resort, you could drive home in reverse.

Seriously if you don't want to go the lexan route, rent a Uhaul and a car trailer.

If you can find a 207d in a US junkyard, you'd better buy a lottery ticket.

Just find a glass shop to cut a piece of plexi to fit, glue it down or duct tape it.....no one will know and you'll be fine till you get home....or the idea helmet works too!
