Motor Mounts and shield

Roy informed me of a way to check to see if you need to replace your
motor mounts with a #2 pencil. My wife's SD failed the test, so I'm
going to replace the mounts with Lemforder, as I understand they are made by the same factory as OEM. I ordered Phoenix, but PP sent the Lemforders. I can even see where they ground off
the Mercedes star in the rubber. I am missing the shield on the passenger
side. I thought it was a heat shield but after hunting around I find it's actually a drip shield to keep oil off the rubber. A new one is 48.00!! So
can I leave it off, or can I just make one with a piece of aluminum gutter
flashing or perhaps a beer can? If it really is just for drips even an aluminum baking pan sheet metal should work. If I just leave it with nothing, is it all that big a deal?

Silly question I guess but I read the pencil test and didn't understand it What is the engine mount cup? I've replaced mounts on one of the cars, would love to do the test on the other but no clue where to stick the pencil....

Stick the pencil

Stick it between the cup and the aluminium crossbar that holds the motor.
Just under the shield and above the cup. It's a lot easier to see on the side without the drip/heat shield. The pencil should slip easily into the space. Mine will not accept the pencil by about 1/32" so not bad, but it
is causing vibration that is perhaps breaking my air cleaner mount.

I took my heat shields off years ago....I did so, so I can inspect the mounts easier with the shields it hard to see the condition of the mounts....

as mentioned above, they're not really heat shields. I'm sure the one under the turbo functions as one though. they are drip shields. they keep fuel and oil drippings from premature deterioration...

if your car is drip free, and you NEVER spill fuel when changing filters and such, they do nothing... (I'm not that good though...)

There is some pics in some of the other threads on this. If you look closely you will see the Phoenix Logo. It is not the same shape but the Phoenix Logo reminds Me of the Chevrolet Logo.

My bad....I know that but I still call them that...what is it tomato tomatoe both the same in my book

Oh I am not either....I just put cheap, knock on wood uro mounts on way back when...all I could afford....and the ones I removed I thought were fine because I couldn't tell from up top....but they were completely gone....to the point the engine shifted....so I opted to keep them off...

I'll probably change the ones in the 240 this week. Haven't done this pencil test but the motor idles very smoothly and there is still a lot of vibration, the arm looks like it's sitting right on the cup visually. The 240 has so much room its easy to look and see that a tongue depressor might not fit, let alone a pencil.

Wish I could do today but gotta take a group out for the shooting part of the NC concealed carry. Hopefully we'll all finish with as many holes as we started with.

I always suspect that OE surplus was bought and repackaged any time an OE part is substituted for anything else. The Nissan plant is local to me & I'm learning distribution channels to move parts. Playing with trannies, wheels, ECUs, bumpers, lights etc is fun.

Well, just did mine. This 240 has a center mount connecting oil pan to crossmember, but it's broken (bolt broken off in block). I can likely get the bolt out but can't find a replacement rubber mount in the EPC, guess I may have to flexane.

This car has no trace of a engine shock. Don't know if it was supposed to have one, but it doesn't.

The right and left motor mount weren't actually bolted to the frame. I guess someone couldn't line up the holes, the big bolt was in the bottom, but the two smaller hex heads on each side were gone. Between that and broken center it's no wonder it vibrated so badly.

I would fabricate a drip shield of some kind; although there are no drips now, you never know when one will begin. This is simply to keep the oil/fuel off the rubber and decrease premature deterioration.

On my W201, the only reason I had to replace the mount (only the driver's side) is due to fuel drips.

No, the two mounts are the same, but there is an additional shield that goes on the driver's side. It is a separate plate.
