You raise a good point.

I changed the seal and tightened the nut with some pretty feckin hard blows from the hammer and punch. Enough to begin deforming the notches on the steel nut, so thought that was a good place to stop!

I'll take the gamble on it, and hope it works. Will report here if the wheels fall off.
