2 alternator/fan belts shredded...why?! **SOLVED**

Greetings fellow afficionados.

So I've had 2 belts shred on me, both very new. I replaced them in the last several months with good quality ones.

Quick background:
1. purchased 83 300d in July 2012
2. came with a broken/not attached alternator bolt
3. alternator stopped charging
4. replaced alternator with a used one (single pulley) from an 83 240D
5. SSSSQQQQUUUUEEEEEEEEAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Lots and lots of squeeling, then burnt rubber smell, then belt failure
6. I spent about 40-50 man hours swapping/adjusting/re-belting/etc. to figure this out and have not been successful.
7. I replaced the alternator bolt and used the mounting bracket from the 240 and finally got the battery to charge as it should (13.8 v running)....
8. I tightened the alternator with all the bracket bolts loose, but it seemed I was tightening it entirely too far...perhaps it wasn't tight enough!
9. but the belt squeal returned and the belt failed. It appears the failure is on the *outside* of the belt rather than the notched inside surface.

PLEASE ADVISE. I'm at my wits end with this thing. My desired result is a charging battery and no squeal from the belt...is that too much to ask, America?!

THANK YOU!!

Something is not aligned properly. Can you take some pictures of your setup since your using a 240 bracket. Pictures of the pulleys (water pump, alternator ), belt alignment, etc. will also help.

I can do that this afternoon. I'll look on my phone to see if there are any left on there. I wonder if there is a spacing issue with the alternator from the 240? Either the pulley is too far rear-ward or forward of the other pullies?! I set the 300D bracket alongside the 240 bracket and they appeared nearly identical, save for the 'hole' in the top of the 300D bracket.

Perhaps there are spacers that would fix the problem!?

Check the clearance of the belt with the "flap" part of the adjustment bracket. The part that forms a pocket around the threaded part of the L-shaped threaded bolt. The flap can get bent and if there is a bit of wobble as the belt moves, it can rub on the edge of the flap. That could lead to belt shredding over time. The flap can be gently bent up and out of the way if needed.

If you seem to be out of options remove the Alternator and take it and have it tested. I am saying that to see if there is some issue with the Bearings or too much clearance in side.
Meaning a Bearing problem can cause the thing to freeze up and not rotate fast enough.

are you trying to use the single pulley alt with the dual pulley crank? this will never work, alignment is off, and belt sizes are incompatible.

DOH! There-in lies my problem. Another reason to just keep things 'stock' rather than Frankenstein things together without enough info to do it the 'right' way.

Thank you for your help! JD

Frankensteining is fine. Can you stack a spacer in there to correct the offset?

I'd be happy to try, but is the belt the same width? I'll check the part numbers and see. Also how thick a spacer?!

VSTECH what say you?

Or swap the double pulley from the alternator you removed - if you still have it.

Happy Motoring, Mark
