'95 OM606 Fuel Filter Replacement

EDIT: Just found the answers to two of my questions. Yay for the FSM!

I'm ordering parts for the first fuel filter replacement since my '95 came under my purview. Obviously I want a replacement o-ring for the prefilter, but is there any reason to order a replacement o-ring for what is labeled as the fuel filter housing?

Also, any preference on filter brands here?

Sorry, I know these are elementary questions, but I come from Cummins-land, where most maintenance consists of hitting things until they start working again.

Thanks!

Most secondary fuel filters come with a replacement o-ring (depends on the brand). I typically buy Mann filters (have the o-ring) but there are many acceptable brands.

I just changed both fuel filters yesterday. The big (main) fuel filter should come with 2 Orings which go on the central bolt which is both the shutoff valve and the main bolt to hold the filter in place.

You will have to order an Oring for the prefilter separately.

FYI, on my car, I pulled the old main filter, and of course some fuel leaks on to the belt and other stuff in the engine compartment as you are maneuvering it out past the vacuum line, etc., so it is good to have a plastic dish to put the old filter in. Don't spill out the fuel. Now take the new filter and pour the fuel from the old filter into it to fill it as much as you can.

I buttoned everything back up. You get one immediate start from the fuel which is in the lines, and then the car dies as that fuel is used. Now crank for 30 sec and let the starter rest for several minutes. For me, the car started after another 20 sec of cranking. Once it starts firing, do not release the starter until it's actually running. You can bump the throttle pedal a bit to help it start.

As I just noted in another post last night, new fuel filters really perk the car up if the old ones are starting to clog.

Rgds,
Chris W.

Filling the main filter with fuel (or ATF) as much as you possibly can is a big help...you can usually get it close to the top.
