Question - Water Pump Removal - OM617
On the OM617, can the water pump be removed from the housing, with the housing left on the engine?
It look like it can be removed by itself after the five 10mm head bolts are out, but it hasn't freed up after reasonable effort using PB Blaster on the gasket area. The Haynes manual says that the pump comes off with the housing. This sounds like there is additional attachment of the pump on the back of the housing, in the water jacket..... is this the case? Thanks for any information.

I did mine a few months ago. I'm pretty sure I pulled the pump first and then pulled the housing. I could have left the housing in place, but I wanted to replace the gasket between the housing and the block, as well as the one between the pump and the housing. It may have been overkill, but now I have no coolant leak.

The pump is off, with the housing still on the engine.
Thanks Skippy, for posting your experience with this. I've done much with my two 300SDs over the years but never any water pump replacements. As we all know.... there is a first time for everything. The water pump housing IS aluminum.
