Specs wanted: W126 300SD weight distribution and GVW or curb weight
Having trouble finding these. Does someone either have them or have a suggestion as to where I can find them?
|
What year and model? Early ones are around 3650 later ones around 4000 long wheelbase somewhat heavier. They don't weigh much if any more than a 123 with similar equipment.
|
1982 300SD. I just found the weight, too... :). Any idea on where I could find the weight distribution?
|
try wikapedia maybe or search weight distribution for w126 cars
|
I believe you will find It very near 5050.
|
based on the gas flap, 28psi front, 30 rear, I'd bet it's more like 48/52... maybe 42/58, based on vehicle anticipation of stopping force throwing weight forward, I'd say.
american vehicles with poor weight distribution have 58/42 and their tires are often 32/28... |
On my 84 500SEL it is on the B pillar inside the drivers door.

I might have this information. I purchased a large database from NHTSA. It includes GVW, weight distribution, front/rear brake bias, and plenty of other "stuff." I'll check tonight when I get home and see if the W126 is included.

This from a 1986 FSM supplemental manual for the 126.125 300SDL (OM603):
Empty weight: 1740kg Permissible total wight: 2210kg Axle load front/rear: 1065kg/1145kg |

and with just the driver it would be more like 52/48.;) |

I think that's the gross vehicle weight... so that's the distribution loaded... empty would seem the weight will favor the front... |
Take the car to a truck stop and weigh it for eight bucks or so. You'll get the total weight and the front and rear axle weights. Weigh it in the running condition you're interested in. In my case, that was full fuel, driver, and no passengers or cargo. In this condition, my 240D was considerably heavier on the front axle than the rear.

What do you plan to use this information for? I am at a loss.

Seriously, though, I'm considering brake mods and some of the equations I'm working with require finding the car's center of gravity, which is found using the wheelbase and weight distribution.
|
My rears lock up before fronts on clean dry pavement. This isn't good. I think it happens because tire technology has advanced considerably in the 30 years since my car was made, and I buy the stickiest tires available. I'd love a driver adjustable proportioning valve, as is seen in F1, but funds don't allow it right now.
|
The benz brakes are not prone to lockup like that. I experienced it once on my 500SEC but it was because I had ceramic pads on front and not back. The fronts locked up because the ceramics grab a lot more than other types. Have you changed brake pads?
|
I've been very impressed by the brakes in both my 126's. For a car of that size, they'll perform very well. I wouldn't be afraid to drive to Lowell daily with it.
IIRC, Centrix sells a high carbon rotor and a good set of pads that will make a simple pad and rotor change produce good results. I get fair pricing from local stores if interested. |
