Cibie 7" H4 Headlights - what a difference!

When my left sealed headlight went out, I decided to upgrade to e-code H4 headlamp. After reading through the threads and looking for a reasonable deal, I bought the Cibies H4 headlights from Amazon for $86 a pair with free shipping. Amazon had 2 in stock when I ordered and they now charge retail sales tax for CT.

What a huge difference. No more creeping around corners in the winter. They have a wide viewing angle. Road signs just pop out at you with the high beams on. They are much better than the Hella H4's that I had installed on another diesel years ago.

Now anyone here have a recommendation to replace the fogs?

Oh yeah, do I ever hear you. I still have the old sealed beams in my wagon.

By pure chance I had never driven it in the rain, in the dark, in a really good storm until last week. I was horrified, in fact I narrowly missed taking out some idiot riding a bike in the dark, dressed in dark clothes, with no lights or reflectors. I was on top of him before I knew there was anything there.

I ordered the H4s from Amazon the next day. I cannot believe we drove with those junky old sealed beams for so long here in North America. The lighting equivalent of not having rear brakes.....

Cibie 7" Headlights -what a difference

Glad to hear you made the switch to headlight conversions. I also made the leap some time back via Hella units on my W116 300SD and have been very pleased.

My foglights are Hella 550's mounted in same locations as stock. Did have to modify my bumper as the Hella's were slightly larger than MB units.

A site you may want to visit is Rally Lights, Hella, TerraTrip, Hans, WRC, ZAMP - RallyLights.com. They offer upgraded wiring packages to minimize voltage drop from battery to lights. Seems halogen lights are very sensitive to reduced voltage and benefit from higher voltage. My 1980 Benz registered 11.3V at the headlights before the wiring upgrade. The increase in light output just from putting voltages where they should be was very noticeable.

I plan to do this swap.....but I must say, my sealed beams do a pretty good job at providing light......they were horrible as everyone else mention but I went around the car and cleaned all the ground points and all the lamp plugs n connectors......I then went for a drive at night sometime after and was shocked how well my sealed beams were throwing out light......granted I am still going to do this upgrade once funds are available.....but with low beam sealed and my clear fogs on..I have pretty decent lighting....

I too did the switch years ago, to Bosch H4's first. One of the lenses broke (road debris) and I could not find anything similarly priced as the ones I got, so I opted for Hellas. Pretty much the same!

Where did you get Cibie's for $86 a pair? Last I checked (years ago also) they were $70 for one!

Not that I'm in any hurry, because I already have Bosch Euro assemblies with new lenses. I found that if I adjusted the fogs a little higher, the beam of light would also be spread better... but not high enough to cause oncoming glare to traffic.

Just a few days ago I was checking the beam adjustment too, how timely! Note this was not for proper adjustment, but for symmetry only
