In fairness, in this video he touts George Murphy's wares over his own Oh, well. Can you trim the video to just the scenes that show inside views of the oil and tranny pans after gravity draining?

I like doing an extraction - much smaller chance for spills. My Pella is too small for the MB. I just "upgraded" it with an old water chiller compressor - no more pumping!

pfft... his high quality extractor looks like a standard steel gas can, and 1/2 a bicycle pump...
it takes very little vacuum to draw out the oil. anybody got a gas can, and a cap with mityvac nipples can do this.
I use my mityvac in a standard 1 quart atf bottle to adjust precision levels of the trans fluid...
sure, a compressor is gonna be easier and faster, but the standard mityvac will do it.

Ya but the standard pump takes 3 hands and a foot - one to pump, one to hold the pump, a foot to step on the base of the tank and hold it in place, and another had to move the hose around. Using the compressor lets you work the hose easily

Since the video is blocked I am going to assume that this thread is pertaining to oil changes?

That being said the forty bucks I spent on a shoreline marine oil pump was so worth it. It reduced the annoyances of an oil change down to having a bunch of stuff stupidly routed over the oil fill cannister

Extractor vs. Drain

These threads are almost as common as oil threads. Try the following easy experiment.

Get your oil up to temperature, then suction the crankcase. Before adding oil, get underneath and remove drain plug. See what comes out.

MBs of all ages are designed for suctioning the crankcase. That is the way it is done at the dealership. The dipstick tube goes down to the lowest point in the crankcase, even lower than the drain plug. You DO NOT have to insert a plastic suction tube to the bottom of your dipstick tube. You only have to seal the tube from your suction unit to the top of the dipstick tube. A MityVac extractor includes a plastic cork with a hole in it for that purpose. If not a MityVac I'm sure you can find another way.

You can carpet your garage in white shag if you suction your oil. That said, it doesn't hurt to get under the car once a year to see what else is going on.

I always drain my oil after the engine has reached operating temp. I don't have an oil sucker.

X2. You don't need to insert a suction tube in the dipstick tube. The dipstick tube is the suction tube! I made a suction setup with a 50 lb helium tank and an adapter to the dipstick tube. After suctioning out the oil, took drain plug out to check and not one drop, that's right, not one came out.

Honestly, before reading about extractors on the BM sites, I wasn't aware anyone used those. I can see how it's valuable on an MB with the lower covering the engine and the oil filter being accessed from the hood. You don't even have to drive on ramps to change the oil.

I, however will remain old school and drop the drain plug. It gives me an opportunity to examine suspension bits and so forth as I'm getting oil all over my driveway.

A steel gas can will collapse with vacuum.

My shoreline came with a hose to stuff down the dipstick hole so that is what I use.

not the style used in the picture... the ROUND style. not the rectangle style...

and if you pull enough vacuum to collapse a STEEL can, you have a problem...2" should be PLENTY to draw up the oil...
heck, I bet a shop vac attached to the dipstick would do a fine job...

Maybe I did something wrong, but my homemade extractor (heavy gasketed bucket, nylon lines, brass barbs) couldn't extract oil worth a darn. The vacuum source was gasser #2 idling to pull a vacuum. It would start to crush the bucket but the oil just creeeeeped out. I gave up after 20 minutes.
