What gaskets are in 603 head gasket kit?

I think I've decided I'm going to use the 606 HG when I put my #22 head on so I want to order the gaskets individually if it makes sense. I already have an exhaust manifold gasket and an intake manifold gasket so I think I only need the water connection towards the front of the head and the injector heat shields. There's a few gaskets/o-rings in the 603 kit that I don't recognize so I was hoping somebody might know or have a list of the gaskets in the kit? I've tried searching but don't seem to come up with what I need.

Trying to get things ordered so I can get the w124 back up and running. Thanks in advance!

What makes the 606 gasket preferred now for the 603?

I'm JUST finishing up my #22 head install. You're going to want to make sure you remove the vacuum pump, which means a new vacuum pump gasket. Also, you'll need to remove the intake-crossover gasket, so a new one will be needed. I decided to replace my water pump since everything else was off and my cooling system was compromised from the head gasket leak. I did order a head gasket from PeachParts, and an exhaust gasket - only to find that the head gasket came with an exhaust and intake gasket included in the package! So, I'd call them first to make sure of what is included (although I have two 300TD's, so spare gaskets won't be wasted here).

Good luck with the head replacement - plenty of great folks here on the forum who are willing to help.

The material its made from. 606 uses a MLS gasket (multiple layer steel) instead of the fiber material the 603 gasket is made out of. The gasket lines up, just have to make one hole in it for an oil passage the 606 doesn't have. Supposedly its a secret sauce item the euro guys use on their suped up Benz diesels.

Was hoping somebody knew what all was needed but I may have to call PP and see if they know or can find out. The vacuum pump is coming off because I snagged a nice updated covered bearing pump from the local PnP. I've been reading about the head swap so I'm almost ready. Just have to take the head to machine shop to get checked out before I install it.

The Victor Reinz 603 gasket kit comes with HG, inlet, exhaust manifold gaskets, heat shields (6), top radiator host bracket gasket, miscellaneous oil rings, chain tensioner aluminum seal rings etc. There are quite a lot of small loose bits in there which I did not use.

here's a pic...
Looks like a LOT of gaskets you'll not need on a 603...

Yeah, I found the part number for the 606 head gasket alone so I don't have to buy all the gaskets in the kit that I wouldn't need. Per the EPC it's 6060160320 or W0133-1791909 in the aftermarket world. Trying to get the part numbers for all the gaskets in the 603 kit now. I have some of the gaskets already so I'm trying to save $$ if I can but if I have to I'll just get the 603 kit and the 606 HG.

Image of a 603 head gasket set form Pelican Parts -

There's the head gasket, manifold gaskets, upper radiator hose housing thingy gasket, injector seals, and at least the o-ring for the cabin heater supply/fuel thermostat. I don't remember where everything else goes.

I'll narrow it down... I'm not sure what the items in the highlighted area are:

My guess would be PC seal rings... but there's only 5 of them. the other two little rings are banjo bolt seals, and the o-rings are for the thermostat or something similar...

Interesting. I have been amassing parts to do the top end on my SDL, just have not purchased the gasket set yet nor the updated timing cover.

Any links on the 606 gasket modification?

Updated timing cover? Apparently I have some reading to do!

As far as a link to the modification I didn't see a DIY type thing. Basically it's one hole that needs to be drilled in the 606 gasket. Just put old gasket on 606 gasket then mark hole location. Also using some copper gasket "paint" is recommended to help with sealing the surfaces.

I was unable to source the HG alone for the 606. Lmk if it works out for you. The directions as listed are correct although I wonder about copper on aluminum.

Did you install yours without the copper spray, Or did you end up just using the 603 gasket in the end?

Early timing covers apparently crack where that tensioner hinges, if that makes sense. There are piles of updated PNs, it is wild.

I will probably stick with the latest 603 gasket, I do not mind DIY but drilling into a gasket sounds like it could cause issues down the line.
